Speaker 1:Pushkin. In the fall of nineteen eighty six, Ronald Reagan found himself at the center of a massive scandal that looked like it might bring down his presidency.
Speaker 2:Did you make a mistake in sending arms today, ron.
Speaker 1:Sir, No. No.
Speaker 2:It involved secret arms trafficking in Iran, a covert war in Nicaragua, an attempt to buy back American hostages in Lebanon, and the destruction of lots and lots of evidence in Washington, DC.
Speaker 1:And I'm not taking any more questions, and I'm.
Speaker 2:Going to work.
Speaker 1:He became known as the Iran Contra affair. I'm Leon Mafok, co creator of slow Burn. In my podcast Fiasco Iran Contra, you'll hear all the unbelievable details of a scandal that captivated the nation nearly forty years ago, which few of us still remember today. They were lying to the press, they were lying to the public. They lied incessantly to each other. I later learned that he had suicide pills and I had nothing. And then you proceeded to remove documents from your boots and from other parts.
Speaker 2:Of your clothing. That's correct, sir.
Speaker 1:The reason I destroyed documents and was not the question. That's important.
Speaker 2:It was against the law. I brought it home and put it in a can and let a match to it.
