Episode notes
Louise Hay: 7 Mental Habits to Keep You Calm and Trusting of Life is a gentle reflection on how to develop a more peaceful mindset, respond to uncertainty with greater confidence, and build a kinder relationship with yourself. This message explores seven mental habits that can help you approach everyday challenges with more patience, acceptance, and emotional balance. When life feels uncertain, it is easy to become caught in fear, overthinking, self-criticism, or the need to control every outcome. But knowing more, planning more, and worrying more do not always bring the peace we are looking…

Speaker 1:Hello, my dear. I am glad you are here with me today. And before we begin, I would like you to let your shoulders come down just a little. You may not have noticed that you were holding them up. We do that, you know. We carry the groceries, answer the messages, think about tomorrow, replay yesterday, and somewhere in the middle of it all, the body decides... it had better prepare for an emergency. Sometimes there is no emergency at all, only a very busy mind. I want to talk with you about staying calm, but I do not mean becoming a person who is never upset, never worried, and never surprised by life. I have never met such a person, and I am not sure I would enjoy having lunch with one. Peace does not mean that the sea never moves. It means that when a wave comes, you do not immediately decide that the whole ocean has turned against you. You begin to trust that you can remain with yourself, look at what is happening, and discover the next step. Most of us try to create peace by arranging everything outside ourselves. We want everyone to behave properly, every plan to succeed, every bill to be paid early,
Speaker 1:and every person we love to answer the telephone at once. Then, we tell ourselves, we shall relax. But life is full of unanswered questions, changed plans, delayed messages, and people who have minds of their own. If your peace depends upon controlling all of that, you will be waiting a very long time. The habits we are going to explore are not ways of escaping reality. They are ways of meeting reality without frightening ourselves before we have even found out what is true. Peace begins when I stop asking life to remove every uncertainty and begin trusting myself within it.
Speaker 1:One of the most useful things you can learn is to examine a thought before you invite it to run your entire day. A thought arrives and says, something is wrong, and we behave as though it has presented official identification. We do not ask where it came from or whether it knows what it is talking about. We simply handed the keys. Suppose someone has not replied to your message. That is what happened. No reply has arrived. Then the mind becomes very creative. They are angry. I said the wrong thing. I am not important. They are leaving me.
Speaker 1:In less than five minutes, an unanswered message has become the end of a relationship and the other person may simply be taking a shower. This is why I like to separate three things. What happened? What meaning I gave it? And what I now feel tempted to do. They have not replied is the event. I do not matter is an interpretation. Sending six more messages is a reaction. When you can see these separately, you have room to choose. You might say, I do not know the whole story yet.
Speaker 1:That sentence is not glamorous. but it can save you from a great deal of unnecessary suffering. Begin listening for the moments when a passing experience becomes a statement about who you are. You make one poor choice and say, I am a failure. Someone rejects your offer and you decide, I am unwanted. You feel anxious and conclude, I am a weak person. how quickly we turn a temporary event into a permanent identity. You are not the last thing that happened to you. You are not one decision, one opinion, one uncomfortable conversation, or one thought that crossed your mind at two o'clock in the morning. Thoughts come through the mind in much the same way that people pass through a railway station. Some are useful travelers. Some are confused.
Speaker 1:A few should not be allowed to direct the trains. You can notice a thought without building a home for it. The next time fear speaks with great authority, ask, is this a fact or is this what I am afraid might be true? Do not fight with the answer. Just make the distinction. You may discover that your mind has been presenting predictions as evidence. Then choose a sentence that gives you space. I will wait for more information. There may be another explanation or whatever I learn, I will support myself through it. I am not every thought that passes through my mind. I choose the thoughts. that bring me clarity and peace. Of course, there are times when the mind is moving so quickly that trying to reason with every thought becomes another form of exhaustion. This is when I would stop talking to the thoughts for a moment and begin with the body. Your breath is always happening in the present. It cannot breathe yesterday, and it cannot take tomorrow's breath in advance. It knows only this one.
Speaker 1:When you breathe in, the heart rate commonly rises a little. When you breathe out, it commonly slows a little. So a soft, slightly longer exhale can be a simple way of telling the body that it no longer needs to race quite so fast. Nothing dramatic is required. Breathe in gently for four counts, if that is comfortable, and breathe out for six. Never strain. This is not a competition, and no prize is given for turning blue. Let the inhale come easily, one, two, three, four, and then let the exhale lengthen, One, two, three, four, five, six. Do that again. On the inward breath, you might think, I am safe in this moment. As the breath leaves, say silently, I release. The problem may still be there when you finish, but now it may return to its actual size. A calm body gives the mind a better place from which to see. You are not using the breath to deny what is happening. You are reminding yourself that you do not have to become the emergency in order to respond to it. With every gentle breath, I return to myself.
Speaker 1:My body is learning that this moment is safe. There is another habit that can feel surprisingly uncomfortable at first. Spending a little time alone without immediately filling the silence. Solitude and abandonment are not the same thing, though many people have confused them. Abandonment says, no one is here for me. Solitude says, I am here with myself. That is an entirely different experience. Try sitting near a window for 10 minutes without the telephone in your hand. Drink your tea without reading anything. Walk slowly, without turning the walk into a performance report about steps, calories, distance, or productivity.
Speaker 1:You do not have to achieve enlightenment beside the kitchen window. Just be there. At first, the mind may produce everything it has been waiting to tell you. It may remember an embarrassing conversation from 12 years ago. It may prepare a shopping list, invent an argument, and wonder whether you should change your entire life before dinner. Let it chatter. You need not chase every thought out of the room. Notice it and return to the tea, the window, your footsteps, or the sound of your breathing. Silence sometimes feels empty only because we have not yet learned to recognize our own presence within it. If you have always depended upon noise, attention, work, or other people's reactions to tell you that you exist, quiet can feel like disappearing. Stay for a few minutes anyway, not as punishment, and not because being alone is more spiritual than enjoying company, We need one another, and loving companionship is one of life's great gifts. But it is also lovely to discover that you do not vanish when no one is watching you. You are still here. Your inner life is still moving. There is wisdom beneath the noise,
Speaker 1:although it may speak very softly. Ask yourself a simple question. What do I need to know today? then wait without forcing an answer. It may come while you are sitting there or later when you are washing a cup. Inner wisdom has no obligation to perform on command. The important thing is that you have created a place where it can be heard, little by little. Your own company becomes less like an empty room and more like a familiar home. When I enjoy my own presence, silence no longer feels empty.
Speaker 1:It becomes a place where I can hear life. Have you ever noticed how the mind wants an answer to everything immediately, preferably before breakfast, and with a written guarantee attached? It wants to know whether the relationship will work. whether the decision is correct, whether the money will come, whether the body will heal, and whether next Thursday will be pleasant. If life replies, we shall see, the mind often behaves as though this is completely unacceptable customer service. Yet so much of life takes place in this unfinished space. We are waiting for news. learning what something means, watching a situation develop, or discovering that two apparently opposite things can be true at once. This brings us to the next habit, learning to accept what is here, including the gray areas that have not yet become a clear yes or no.
Speaker 1:Acceptance does not mean that you like what is happening. It does not mean approving of poor behavior, abandoning your needs, or deciding that nothing can change. It simply means that you stop arguing with the fact that, at this moment, this is what you are dealing with. There is the original difficulty, and then there is the additional suffering we create by repeating, this must not be happening. Perhaps it should not have happened. Perhaps someone behaved badly. Perhaps you would make a very different choice if you could return to yesterday. But right now, it is happening. And all the energy spent demanding a different past is energy unavailable for caring for yourself in the present. This is where acceptance becomes practical. You say, I do not like this, but I recognize that it is here. Now, what can I do? Can you feel the difference? One position leaves you wrestling with reality. The other gives you your hands back.
Speaker 1:The mind loves to divide life into neat boxes, good or bad, success or failure, love or rejection, right or wrong. Boxes make it feel organized. Unfortunately, people and situations rarely stay inside them. A season can be painful and still teach you something valuable. A person can love you and yet be unable to meet an important need. Leaving a familiar place may bring freedom and grief at the same time. You may make the correct decision and still miss what you chose to leave. None of this means that you are confused or that the decision was wrong. It means you are capable of holding more than one truth. Emotional maturity is not the elimination of contradiction. It is the ability to remain kind to yourself while different feelings share the same room. Suppose you are waiting to learn whether you have received a job. The mind says, if I get it, my life is moving forward. If I do not, I am a failure. Is that really the whole story?
Speaker 1:The job may be wonderful. It may also reveal challenges you cannot yet see. Not receiving it may disappoint you. and it may turn you toward work that fits you better. At this moment, you simply do not know. I do not know yet is not a dangerous sentence. It is an honest sentence. You can live for a while without forcing the unknown to become a tragedy. Try asking, what is true right now, and what is the most loving step I can take? Perhaps what is true is that you are waiting. The loving step may be preparing for either answer, applying somewhere else, eating lunch, or putting the telephone down for half an hour. None of these actions solves the whole future. They keep you in relationship with the life you have today. Let us say something together here, but say it slowly enough to hear it. I release the need to understand everything today. Once more, I release the need to understand everything today. Now add, I can live peacefully while the answer is still unfolding. You may notice an inner voice protesting. No, I cannot. I need to know. Thank that frightened voice. Tell it, I understand
Speaker 1:that certainty feels safer to you. We are going to care for today while life reveals tomorrow. Acceptance is not passive. It is a calm platform from which intelligent action becomes possible. Now let us speak about the thoughts that keep circling because they have never been brought into the light. Vague Fear is remarkably talented. It can fill an entire room without ever introducing itself. You feel dread in the body, but when someone asks what you are afraid of, you say, everything.
Speaker 1:Everything is difficult to address. A particular fear is easier. So take a piece of paper and write this question. What is the worst thing I am imagining right now? Do not make the answer elegant. Write what the mind is actually saying. I am afraid I will lose my job and will not be able to support myself. I am afraid this person will leave and I will be alone. I am afraid the test result will change my life. There it is. The shadow now has an outline. Some people are reluctant to do this because they think writing down a fear will cause it to happen. A thought is not a magical order simply because you looked at it honestly. In fact, an unexamined fear often directs far more behavior than one you have named. Once it is on paper, ask. How likely is this outcome based on what I know, not based on how frightened I feel?
Speaker 1:Fear often confuses intensity with probability. Because the feeling is strong, the prediction seems certain. Yet a powerful feeling is evidence that you are alarmed. It is not necessarily evidence that disaster is approaching. Then ask a more useful question. If this did happen, what would I do first? Not everything, just first. If you lost the job, perhaps the first action would be to calculate what you have, contact someone you trust, and learn what assistance or opportunities are available.
Speaker 1:If a relationship ended, the first action might be calling a friend and giving yourself one evening without making permanent conclusions about your future. If you receive difficult news, you would gather accurate information and identify the people qualified to help. The mind imagines catastrophe as a dark wall with nothing beyond it. A first step creates a door. Who could support you? What knowledge, savings, skills, relationships, services, or previous experience would still belong to you? Fear likes to erase every resource from the picture, put them back. You may not have everything you would like, but you are rarely as empty-handed as anxiety claims. Remember another time when life changed suddenly. What did you do? Perhaps you cried, complained, became angry, and then eventually found your footing. We sometimes think strength means responding beautifully from the first minute. It does not. Strength may look like falling apart for a while and then making one telephone call. You have already begun again more times than you remember. I am not suggesting that you rehearse disasters every morning over coffee. We
Speaker 1:are not giving fear away. its own television program. This practice is useful when one unnamed possibility is already dominating the mind. Give it a name, examine the evidence, identify the first response, and remember your support. Then close the notebook and return to the room. You might say, when I give fear a name, it loses the power to become everything. Say it with me if it feels true. This fear is something I am experiencing. It is not the whole of my life. Look around. There are still walls, windows, sounds, tasks, people, and choices. The fear has become one part of the picture instead of the frame around everything. When confidence in the future is low, the mind often demands a grand solution.
Speaker 1:It says, tell me how I will repair my finances, heal every relationship, find my purpose, improve my health, and become a completely new person, preferably by Friday. No wonder you feel tired. You are trying to live the next 20 years before completing this afternoon. Bring the horizon closer. What can you care for in the next 24 hours? If 24 hours seems too large, what can you care for before lunch? This is the sixth habit, collecting very small victories. I know that small actions do not look impressive to the part of us that wants a dramatic transformation.
Speaker 1:Folding the blanket does not feel like changing your life. Drinking a glass of water will not earn applause. Answering one email does not complete the project. But these acts send an important message through your whole being. I can still participate in my life. When a person feels powerless, one completed action is evidence. It says that movement remains possible. Choose something with a clear ending. Put the clothes in the drawer. Take the shower. Wash one plate. Walk for ten minutes. Make the appointment. Read two pages. Do not choose.
Speaker 1:Fix my entire house, because the house will win. Choose one shelf. When it is finished, let it be finished. do not immediately diminish it by saying, that was nothing. It was not nothing. You made a promise to yourself and kept it. Stability is often built in this unremarkable way through dozens of small agreements that restore trust between you and you. Imagine a child learning to walk. The child takes two steps and falls. You do not say, Only two? Your cousin walked across the room. You celebrate because those two steps contain a future. Give your own beginnings the same courtesy. Perhaps today you replied to the message instead of avoiding it. Perhaps you stopped eating when you felt satisfied. Perhaps you rested before exhaustion forced you to stop. These are not tiny matters to the subconscious mind.
Speaker 1:Each action teaches a new pattern. Now choose one thing, not seven things, just one that you can complete after we finish. Decide what it is, and when you have it, say aloud, I do not have to solve my whole life today. Pause. One loving step is enough, and I am taking it now. Then take it. An affirmation joined with an action becomes an experience, and experience is persuasive. You do not have to convince yourself that you are powerful while remaining frozen in the chair. Let the small act show you. There will be days when your one step is much smaller than it was yesterday. Please do not use yesterday's energy as a weapon against today's body.
Speaker 1:Some mornings you can do ten things. On another morning, getting dressed may be the victory. Work with the energy, information, and resources that are actually available. Consistency does not mean identical performance. It means returning to yourself without turning every interruption into abandonment. Miss a day and begin again. There is no committee waiting to disqualify you. All of these habits lead us toward something larger, the belief that life is not your enemy. I like the simple statement, life loves me. Some people hear it and immediately think, if life loves me, why did this happen? It is an honest question. Trusting life does not mean calling every loss desirable or pretending every experience was kind. There are events we would never choose. There are endings that leave an empty chair no positive thought can immediately fill. Life Loves Me does not ask you to celebrate pain. It asks you to leave room for the possibility that pain is not the final author of your story. You may not understand an experience while you are inside it. Often we can see only the piece directly in front of us.
Speaker 1:Years later, we recognize that an ending redirected us. that a disappointment exposed an old belief, that a delay introduced a person, or that a season of uncertainty required us to develop a strength we had never used. This does not make the original experience pleasant. It shows that life continued creating beyond it. Instead of asking only, why is this happening to me? You can occasionally ask, What is this showing me? Perhaps it is showing you where you have been ignoring your needs. What am I being invited to release? Perhaps an identity, a role, a relationship with struggle, or the need to be understood by everyone. What good could eventually be created from here? Do not demand an immediate answer. Some questions need to travel with you for a while. A seed does not explain the tree on the day it is planted. Be careful not to use spiritual ideas to rush yourself out of genuine feeling. If your heart is broken, you need not locate the blessing before supper. Grieve what has been lost. Be angry if anger is present. Rest. Ask for help. Trust can be very quiet during these times. It may be no more
Speaker 1:than the thought, I cannot see beyond this, but I am willing to believe there is a beyond. That small opening is enough. Life does not require a performance of faith. It responds to willingness. Let us work with the words, life loves me, for a moment. Say them, life loves me. What comes up? Perhaps a part of you says, prove it. Do not push that part away. Ask what it has experienced. It may have collected years of evidence. for the opposite belief.
Speaker 1:Tell it, I understand why this is difficult. We will begin noticing where support is already present. Support might be the breath entering without your supervision. It might be a person who called, information that arrived, a meal, a safe place to sleep, or the fact that you are listening to something intended to help you. Begin wherever belief can find a foothold. Now say, even when I cannot see the whole path, I trust that the next right step will be revealed. You are not saying that the entire path must light up tonight. One step is enough. When you reach it, another can appear. This is often how guidance works. We want a map covering the next decade, and life gives us an instinct to make one call.
Speaker 1:Make the call. The following instruction may be waiting on the other side of it. There is great relief in becoming willing to cooperate with life instead of regarding every change as a personal attack. Sometimes the plan falls apart. because it was built from an old belief about what you had to prove. Sometimes a door closes because you have outgrown the room behind it. Sometimes an interruption is simply an interruption, and no grand meaning is required. Trust does not insist that every event become a lesson printed in gold. It says, whatever this is, I will meet it, I will listen. I will use what helps me, release what does not, and continue. Take a moment now and notice the support beneath your body. The chair, the bed, or the floor is holding your weight. You did not have to negotiate with it. Place a hand on your heart and let the other hand rest wherever it feels comfortable.
Speaker 1:Breathe in gently. As you exhale, allow the muscles around your eyes to soften. You do not need to manage the entire future from this room. You only need to be here. Think back over the seven habits we have explored. Not as seven new rules to obey, but as seven places you can return to. A frightening thought appears and you ask whether it is fact or fear. The body becomes agitated and you lengthen the exhale instead of adding another argument. Noise becomes exhausting and you spend a few minutes in your own company. A situation remains unclear and you allow the gray area to exist without naming it failure.
Speaker 1:Fear grows enormous and you give it a name, a probability, and a first step. The future feels impossible and you complete one kind, manageable action. Then, when you cannot see where the road leads, you remember that an unseen road is still a road. You will not perform all seven habits perfectly, Please do not try. One day you will catch a thought quickly. Another day you may believe it for three hours before remembering to question it. This is still progress. You are becoming aware. That awareness creates choice, and choice creates a new experience. Healing is not a perfectly straight line drawn by someone with a ruler. It is more like learning to dance with life. Sometimes you move beautifully. Sometimes you step on your own foot. You smile, adjust, and continue. Let us finish together. Keep your hand over your heart if that feels good. Take a comfortable breath in.
Speaker 1:Let the exhale be a little longer and now repeat these words with me, allowing them to move at the pace of your breath rather than rushing to the end. I am safe in this moment. Breathe. I release what I cannot control. Let the shoulders soften. I trust myself to meet life one step at a time. Again, slowly. Life loves me. Life supports me. And finally, all is unfolding for my highest good. If any sentence feels too large today, change it to, I am willing. Say, I am willing to feel safe in this moment. I am willing to release one thing I cannot control. I am willing to learn. that life may be supporting me in ways I do not yet see. Willingness opens the door without dragging you through it. There is nowhere you need to arrive before you are allowed to be at peace.
Speaker 1:You do not need every answer tonight. You do not need to predict every wave before you trust yourself in the water. Listen to your thoughts. care for your body, respect the truth of the present, and take the next loving step. The rest can reveal itself in its own time. You are here. You are learning. You are not alone within yourself anymore. And for now, my dear, that is more than enough.
