The 4-Question Adversity Protocol
25 Sep 2026 · 6 min
Episode notes
The job of a leader is to find the victory inside every adversity. And the task of each human is to turn defeat into winning and tragedy into triumph. I know that sounds obvious yet those who make their lives beautiful, joyful and great really do make it a practice of seeing windows of opportunity where most spot walls of adversity. I’ve been through a lot in my life. Been bruised and bloodied, disappointed and dejected. Yet, I’ve always done my best to keep moving forward. And se...

Today podcast episode is. focused on a framework that I've offered to my one on one mentoring clients with great effectiveness, and it's called the Adversity Protocol. And essentially, it's a series of four questions that you ask yourself. If you work with a team at work that you and your team can do together, that will allow you to pivot from a problem into possibility. This is what everyday heroes do. They are masters of pivoting or transmuting problems into possibilities whenever you even in your personal life. If there is a soak, a problem is a problem only if you see it as a problem. I'll say that again because I think it's worth writing down and installing as part of your neurological hardwiring. And as a brain tattoo, a problem only becomes a problem when seen as a problem. All so-called problems, things that the majority see as problems. The minority of world class performers understand our actually blessings in disguise. So let's get right into it. Question number one to ask yourself when something seems difficult. Let's say you've lost a big sale at work. Or let's say you've had a big fight at home. Ask yourself question number one. How could this be worse? One question you could ask is has anyone died here? Okay. Nope. It immediately shifts the psychology and emotionality into some perspective. So question number one. How could this be worse? You could actually with your team or at home with your family. You could list it out so it becomes real. So it becomes very obvious. Now you have some perspective. It reduces the emotional charge. Question number two, the WTA question. What's the opportunity here? It's such an excellent question to ask yourself when you're facing a challenge. What's the opportunity here. Oh, we lost the client. It wasn't the right client. Oh, we wanted to buy this house. Someone outbid us. What's the opportunity here? It probably wasn't for us. We're probably being protected by the universe in some way. What is yours cannot be taken. I guess it wasn't ours. It was meant for someone else. Which means there's an even better house there for us. What's the opportunity here? Let's say you're traveling and you missed a flight. What's the opportunity here? To make a new friend sitting next to me? Let's say you're stuck in traffic. What's the opportunity here? I'm going to be late for the for my meeting. What's the opportunity here? To develop calmness. Life has just sent me a scenario designed to help me develop my patience muscles. Or maybe it's an opportunity to become a member of Traffic University and listen to an audiobook on spirituality or nutrition, or building a great company, or some learning something from history. Okay, so the second question to ask yourself as part of the adversity protocol is WTH. What's the opportunity here. Question number three of this framework. How can I make this fun. Questions are powerful. Often it's not about knowing the answer. It's about asking the right question. And that's a great question. Number three how can we make this fun. We just, you know, hit a roadblock. How can we make this fund that stimulates your creativity and your ingenuity to come up with all these solutions to make it more fun? Maybe we're going to order a pizza now, and we're going to eat it while we figure out solutions. How can we make this more fun? Oh, we're going to do this and whatever and make it more fun. Question number four. Great question. How am I blessed? So you've encountered a wall. You ask yourself question number four. How am I blessed? That will shift you into gratitude. Gratitude is the antidote to fear. Gratitude is the antidote to fear. So you ask yourself, how am I blessed? Which is really, what can I be thankful for right now? Oh, okay. I have food on my table. I have a roof over my head. I have two eyes. If you have two eyes. I have two legs. If you have two legs. I live in a great country. It's sunny today. I've got a great library in my bedroom. And you just go on and on, and you start to breathe, and you start to get some positive neurochemistry that has been activated by gratitude pulsing through your system. So that's the adversity protocol. These first ten days were very, very much about positivity. And this is a specific framework and series of tactics that will help you turn problems into possibility, which is really what every day heroes do on a consistent basis.

The Smartest Response to AI?
When you were a child you lived in bursts of remarkable imaginativeness. Your eyes sparkled and clouds looked like lions. You wished to be an astronaut and a superhero. I pray you get that gleam back. Robots don’t have it. I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in an Artificial Age (Penguin Random House). It's a parable and it's different (by far!) from any book I've ever written. You can join the list here if you'd like ...

Take the Time to Be Excellent
Machines can do things increasingly well. But they are not artisans. This morning I walked by an ancient studio in Rome where an old man produced ceramics. It seems that he’d done so for decades and he worked with devotion, steadiness and bright mastery. I wish this for you. I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in an Artificial Age (Penguin Random House). It's a parable and it's different (by far!) from any book I've ev...

5 Pivots to Become UnKillable
Sometimes—in the hardest and darkest of times—what helps you survive and then thrive and then fly is putting one foot after another foot, after another foot. Legendary Begins With Transformed Awareness
Yes I do believe in destiny. I sense that there is a set of invisible hands guiding us along and encouraging our moves and watching our backs. Having said this, nothing works for someone who does no work. Sorry to say this but there are just too many people on the planet who want the rewards of world-class without lifting a pinky to do what world-class requires. Leadership and personal greatness absolutely requires us to apply APR: Absolute Personal Responsibility. We must set good habi...

The 6 Months Left to Live Question
I wanted to share a chapter from The Everyday Hero Manifesto with you. The chapter is called The 6 Months Left to Live Question. And here it is... Just imagine. For only a second. That you had merely six months left to live. ...6 short months to do all those things you’d promised yourself you’d do. ...6 months to visit the Taj Mahal and listen to Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and see the Mona Lisa and walk along The Great Wall of China. ...6 months to write letters of forgiveness to those...

Begin Thinking Like a Humanitarian
More than ever before. I understand that food is medicine. And through the food that you consume every day, you're either destroying your health, creating disease, in creating increasing inflammation, or through the food you eat, you're becoming healthier. Your nutrition also affects your moods. I'm going to repeat that again because it's so important. Your nutrition affects your moods and of course your nutrition is affecting your Healthset. It'll affect your skin. It'll affect your energy. ...

Habits to Steadily Optimize Your Health
One of the brain tattoos of my teachings that has helped so many of my clients is this one: Energy is more important than intelligence. To dominate your game and build your empire you don’t need to be the smartest person in the room. Not at all. You just need to have the most energy. To implement your visions. To bring application to your dreams. And to handcraft a life you adore. I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in...

Reading a Book Is Having a Conversation With the Author
Often, a writer has distilled 20 or 30 years of their wisdom and expertise and experiences in a single volume (that you can read in a few good evenings or a series of early mornings). Associating with someone who is living the life you want or someone who has skills you wish for or someone who has the interior qualities you hope to embody leaves you richer than when you picked up the book. Sometimes, a single conversation with the right person alters the unfolding of your life. Same for the r...

The "Kill Your Darlings" Mantra for Masterwork Creation
Kill Your Darlings. It’s an old writers mantra (credit: William Faulkner) which speaks to the fact that to make your magic real you need to delete everything from your creative project except for that which is absolutely astonishing. Masterwork is much more about what you leave out than put in. I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in an Artificial Age (Penguin Random House). It's a parable and it's different (by f...
