Speaker 1:I don't want to date you.
Speaker 2:Well, that was harsh.
Speaker 3:Do you think mister Simon is going to replace me?
Speaker 4:No, a servant who wants a story about a servant?
Speaker 5:I'm miss Jean.
Speaker 6:Join me on a trip to Discovery Mountain, where the air is clear, clear enough to hear your imagination, and where every day is an exercise in faith. Join me for today's expedition. The first full day of summer camp has begun. The campers are anxious to get started with the day's activities, and the staff, well, some of the staff are just plain anxious. Natasha is worried about her granddad. Mister Simon. He sounded serious when he told her he needed to talk to her, But what could it be about?
Speaker 6:Camp Director Joyce is worried that she hasn't been as efficient and organized as a camp director should be. Ever since mister Garcia's conversation with Joyce, he's begun to worry just the teensiest little bit that the wonderful costumes that he borrowed might not end up being free after all. And Hattie, she might be more worried than anyone else. She's the activities director, but is the special activity that she spent so much time planning going to end up being a failure. She'll find out later this morning when the first campers arrive at the craft tent. Well, right now the cafeteria is filled with campers and staff enjoying pancakes and fresh blueberries. Let's join them for today's episode called Seriously Serving.
Speaker 4:This is going to be the Awesomest summer camp ever, Hugo.
Speaker 7:Awesomest isn't even a word.
Speaker 4:It is now Cyrus.
Speaker 8:That's counselor Cyrus to you, Hugo, at least this week.
Speaker 4:Okay, okay, counselor Cyrus. But you know it's going to be the awesomest. James has such cool stuff for us to do.
Speaker 9:Henry and I want to do the ropes course.
Speaker 2:Don't forget the climbing wall, Luke.
Speaker 10:Oh and James is working on an offstacker course too.
Speaker 4:That's right, Jackson, my man. Awesomest summer camp ever.
Speaker 11:Chunselor Addison, what are we doing first? Today? Natalia and I want to go swimming.
Speaker 10:I want to try my new swim goggles.
Speaker 12:You get a chance to swim later this morning. We're going to the craft at first. That's what I was hoping for. You're very artistic, aren't you, Piper.
Speaker 7:I love drawing and painting and making things.
Speaker 13:Those are okay, I guess, but I prefer STEM activities.
Speaker 9:STEM activities.
Speaker 13:STEMS stands for science, technology, engineering, and math, the really important stuff.
Speaker 12:You know, Lily, STEM is being replaced really now. It's usually called steam. Steam the a stance for art.
Speaker 13:Yay, art, Well, what does art have to do with science, technology, engineering or math?
Speaker 12:Well, art is intertwined, like campy, the robotics team use art to create the cute little robot.
Speaker 1:Remember.
Speaker 11:Oh yeah, robotics is steam.
Speaker 9:Yeah.
Speaker 12:Lots of things are Like if a musician understands the physics of sound, they can create better music, right, I guess so, And an artist who understands chemistry can choose and use better paids. Leonardo da Vinci combined art and science. Ever heard of him?
Speaker 1:Uh?
Speaker 11:Yeah, he's like super famous.
Speaker 2:So let's give art a chance.
Speaker 12:When we go to the craft tent, miss Hattie's activity is going to be super fun.
Speaker 13:Sounds like you're trying a bit too hard to convince me, but okay, I'm all for steam.
Speaker 9:Full steam ahead.
Speaker 6:Meanwhile, across the cafeteria, James, I really need your help.
Speaker 1:Oh I don't know, Hottie.
Speaker 3:I can help. I'll be checking all the activity areas today anyway, you know, being a more hands on camp director.
Speaker 2:Thanks, Joyce, but I need James for this to work.
Speaker 1:Oh okay, look, Hattie, I'd love to help out, but I just can't right now. But James, I have to go to Trekkers right after breakfast, and after that I'll be supervising kids at the climbing wall for the rest of the day.
Speaker 3:Trekkers, are there supplies you still need?
Speaker 2:I could get them for you.
Speaker 1:Thanks, But I have something to discuss with mister Simon.
Speaker 11:What about?
Speaker 1:Oh hey, look at the time, I better get going.
Speaker 7:Talk to you later, James Holt.
Speaker 3:What are you and mister Simon up to?
Speaker 11:And at another table?
Speaker 14:Harold, Harold, Now what Janet? Look over there at the staff table? What about it?
Speaker 9:So you sitting together again?
Speaker 7:Yes, a bunch of the staff.
Speaker 3:Harold, you know good and well when I'm talking about Hattie and James.
Speaker 14:Yes, and I don't think it's any of our business.
Speaker 2:But aren't you the teensiest little bit curious?
Speaker 3:No?
Speaker 6:Not really, Well, I think this needs to be investigated.
Speaker 14:And I think I'm going to have another pancake before Logan and Kyler eat them all.
Speaker 11:Mia, I wish you were here.
Speaker 6:As the campers and staff finish their pancakes. It's clean up time.
Speaker 3:Hey, Natasha, your cabin's doing archery next right right, Brianna and Haley are finishing up the dishes, and then we'll be right over. I'll walk with you. There's something I want to ask you.
Speaker 10:Brianna and I are done, Miss Natasha.
Speaker 15:Quick work, awesome, and here come Jennet and Lanta. All right, Brianna, you all head to the archery range. Miss Holton, I will be right behind you.
Speaker 10:Race you guys, it's on no food.
Speaker 11:We weren't ready.
Speaker 16:You want to raise?
Speaker 11:Do you? Joyce? No way?
Speaker 16:Okay, spill it. What's bothering you?
Speaker 9:Natasha?
Speaker 3:How do you think I'm doing?
Speaker 4:Well?
Speaker 16:You're definitely worried about something.
Speaker 3:No, I mean, as camp director.
Speaker 16:Oh well, why do you ask?
Speaker 3:I was just wondering if you might have heard anything like from mister Simon.
Speaker 16:Heard anything about you?
Speaker 5:Yeah?
Speaker 3:No, would you tell me if you had? Did he make you promise not to say anything?
Speaker 7:Joyce?
Speaker 16:What are are you getting at.
Speaker 3:Do you think mister Simon is going to replace me.
Speaker 15:Replace you? Why would he and who would he replace you with? Being camp director is hard. It's not like any of us are lining up for the job.
Speaker 3:Don't be too sure you.
Speaker 16:Think someone's trying to get your job?
Speaker 11:Who James?
Speaker 16:Oh, don't be ridiculous.
Speaker 3:I'm not being ridiculous. Surely you've noticed how much more involved James is this year.
Speaker 16:Oh, I guess so.
Speaker 3:Your granddad mentioned he thought a rope's course would be nice to have someday, and James ran with it. When he wasn't in class, he was studying plans and researching regulations.
Speaker 16:He was certainly dedicated to the project, and.
Speaker 3:He was constantly on the phone fundraising and recruiting volunteers to build it.
Speaker 15:Okay, I agree James has really stepped up his game, But what makes you think he wants your job?
Speaker 3:He as much as said so, he offered to take over some of my duties, and he and mister Simon are definitely up to something.
Speaker 16:We have been talking a lot lately, haven't they.
Speaker 3:And they don't seem to want anyone to know what it's about.
Speaker 15:Look, Joyce, you're probably worrying for nothing, but I promise to let you know if I hear anything.
Speaker 3:In the meantime, I'm stepping up my game too, and trying to be the best camp director I can.
Speaker 16:Be, and the best archery instructor too.
Speaker 3:Now that's a target.
Speaker 5:I know I can hit.
Speaker 8:All Right, guys, go in and pick a table to sit at for nearly counselor Cyrus the craft tent.
Speaker 4:Why can't we go see what James is doing with the obstacle course?
Speaker 5:Yeah?
Speaker 10:When do we get to do the actual fun stuff?
Speaker 5:Yeah?
Speaker 12:Doesn't sound like your guys are very enthusiastic, Cyrus.
Speaker 8:Want to switch places, Addison, Your cabin seems a lot easier.
Speaker 12:Not necessarily, I have Lily, I'll.
Speaker 7:Trade you for Hugo and Jackson.
Speaker 12:Oh, I'm guessing how can win them over. She's been planning a really great activity for.
Speaker 2:The kids, A moment of truth, Hattie. Let's hope this works.
Speaker 4:Yeah, something exciting like making pot holders paint rocks.
Speaker 9:There are rolling pins on the tables.
Speaker 11:Are we baking something? It's the craft tent, Piper, not the baking tent.
Speaker 2:But we will be baking something, Lily, huh hmm.
Speaker 10:Baking might be okay, if it's something good like cookies.
Speaker 4:Yeah, Jackson, so we have energy for James obsco course.
Speaker 2:Oh no, you won't be eating anything you bake here. You might break a tooth.
Speaker 12:Oh, don't keep us in suspense, Hattie. We want to know what your special project is.
Speaker 2:The first thing we're gonna do is learn about slab pottery.
Speaker 11:Slab pottery, yes.
Speaker 2:Pottery, which is made from a flat sheet of clay. So that's what the rolling pins are for.
Speaker 4:Yeah, to make a plate for the cookies we don't get to bake.
Speaker 11:I'm gonna make a vase for my mom, a boring old face. I'm gonna make a volcano at the top. I'll put a.
Speaker 13:Hole you can fill with baking soda and vinegar and make exploding lava. We're making tea cups, teacups like my grandma uses or the Queen of England.
Speaker 10:Good question, kid.
Speaker 11:Stop calling me kid.
Speaker 1:I don't like tea.
Speaker 2:Well, these aren't gonna hold tea. Now we're gonna make special cups. They're gonna be tall and narrow.
Speaker 16:Hmm.
Speaker 10:Now this is mysterious.
Speaker 11:What's going in the cups?
Speaker 2:Well, you'll have to make it to find out who's.
Speaker 6:Ready, Poor Hattie, it doesn't look like her idea is going over very well. Well the campers enjoy this activity, we'll find out right after this break. Let's head back into the craft tent and see how the pottery activity is going so far.
Speaker 4:Counselor, Cyrus, why can't we be doing something with James? Look at this, Clai Lump.
Speaker 7:You just have to focus, Hugo.
Speaker 10:But we want to do something fun.
Speaker 2:This will be fun, Jackson. But it's going to be more than that.
Speaker 11:What do you mean We're.
Speaker 2:Gonna have a challenge with a special meaning. How many of you like going to Miss Michelle's cafe. It's more than just a cafe, though, isn't it.
Speaker 9:It's a bakery too.
Speaker 2:Well, yes, Luke, but it's even more. Miss Michelle isn't just serving lemonade and brownies. She's serving people.
Speaker 10:H seriously serving.
Speaker 13:Of course, she serves them. They can't just help themselves to her cookies.
Speaker 1:Too bad.
Speaker 2:Has anyone here ever taken the famous cafe lemonade challenge?
Speaker 8:Y'o, you're missing out. The lemonade challenge is epic.
Speaker 2:Exactly, Cyrus. Can you describe it for the campus?
Speaker 8:Well, the thing is you have to find a tall cup and pour lemonade right to the top, then carry it slowly no spilling, and serve it to someone.
Speaker 11:That's sort of interesting.
Speaker 10:Oh, let's try it and race to see as the fastest.
Speaker 2:No, you're getting way ahead of me, Jackson. Listen at the end of the lemonade challenge. What do you do, Cyrus?
Speaker 7:Oh, you drink lemonade together.
Speaker 17:Yes, and you sit sipping lemonade, and it's much easier to start conversations, to make new friends and then to introduce them to their friend Jesus.
Speaker 3:Huh.
Speaker 2:Why because God wants us to he does. Yes, Hospitality it's a spiritual gift.
Speaker 12:Hey, I was just reading about that. I think it was Romans twelve thirteen.
Speaker 2:That's right, Addison. It says, supply the needs of God's people extend hospitality to strangers.
Speaker 9:God wants us to take strangers to the hospital.
Speaker 11:Hospitality, Luke, not hospital.
Speaker 9:What does hospitality mean?
Speaker 4:It means we're having a lemonade party instead of doing something fun.
Speaker 2:Look, you'll understand more about this as we go along, I hope. Right now, let's keep rolling out our clay.
Speaker 10:Looks like summer camp might not be as fun as we thought it.
Speaker 9:Would be, Hugo.
Speaker 1:Then we'll just have to make it fun.
Speaker 8:Hey, Addison, Patty's idea isn't going over too well, not with my campers anyway.
Speaker 2:Poor LILYI but they'll come around.
Speaker 7:I hope. So you've done the lemonade challenge, right.
Speaker 12:I mean yeah, but I'm terrible at it.
Speaker 7:Hey, maybe this summer you'll get better.
Speaker 2:We'll see well. Anyway.
Speaker 12:Next we go to mister Garcia's and all the campers love drama.
Speaker 7:Don't say that I've had enough drama day.
Speaker 12:Come, Cyrus.
Speaker 4:I'm clean and am I'm glad to see you.
Speaker 5:I'm glad to see you too, Hugo, and I'm glad to see you're so excited about this year's drama protection.
Speaker 4:I'm excited about anything that doesn't involve pottery, teacups, tea cups.
Speaker 8:It's a long story, mister Garcia. Spend some time in crafts and you'll understand.
Speaker 5:I'll take your word for it, Cyrus.
Speaker 8:Okay, settle down, guys and sit in front of the stage. We have to make room for the other cabins too.
Speaker 4:Wow' mister Garcia, how do you get all those big heavy rocks into the stage.
Speaker 5:Easy logan. They're not heavy, they're props and they're hollow inside.
Speaker 13:Whoa, they look so real, mister Garcia, what story are we doing?
Speaker 11:I loved the story of Gideon last year.
Speaker 5:You were a Midianite soldier, weren't you, Lily?
Speaker 11:Can I be a soldier again? Please? Soldiers get to wear armor and march around.
Speaker 5:And I'm afraid there are no soldiers in this year story. But there is a camel.
Speaker 7:Hugo, You're not supposed to be backstage.
Speaker 4:A councilor cyrus.
Speaker 2:There's a camel.
Speaker 10:Look a cat.
Speaker 7:Wow, there is a camera, mister Garcia. Where'd you get it?
Speaker 11:It's so big? Does it have a name?
Speaker 5:All right, everyone sit back down, and please don't touch the camel. It'll be very expensive if anything happens to it. But where did you get it? Valley Community College down in the city. And if you think the camel is impressive, wait till you see the other costumes I got.
Speaker 11:You mean the camel is a costume, yes, Jenet.
Speaker 5:It operates like a big puppet. Someone sits cross legged inside and operates levers and strings to make it moved. Not everything works, but it's ears and tails still twitch.
Speaker 7:That is so cool.
Speaker 5:Hey, I think we could do a podcast about.
Speaker 11:The camel Harold, It's mountain mysteries. Remember where's the mystery? And a camel puppet?
Speaker 9:Mister Garcia, are we doing the story of baby Jesus?
Speaker 11:Why would we be doing a Christmas story? Luke, it's summer.
Speaker 9:The wise men had camels.
Speaker 11:That's not the only Bible story with camels.
Speaker 9:Then what story are we doing?
Speaker 5:The story of Eliezer? Eliezer he was Abraham's servant.
Speaker 4:A servant who wants a story about a servant?
Speaker 10:Yeah, that doesn't sound very interesting.
Speaker 5:Oh but it is. This story has everything adventure and suspense and even romance.
Speaker 11:Yuh, romance? Luck? First, Miss Hattie's having a tea party, and now the play has romance.
Speaker 12:Oh no, Cyrus, I thought Lily and the others would love drama. Then mister Garcia had to ruin it by mentioning romance.
Speaker 8:Kids that age don't really understand it, do they, Addison, I don't think kids our age haven't figured out either. Well, let's hope mister Garcia figures out how to deal with these reluctant actors.
Speaker 6:How will mister Garcia convince the campers that the account of Abraham's servant, Eliezar is a fascinating story. Perhaps we'll find out. After this break, let's head back into the drama tant and see how things are progressing.
Speaker 11:I thought the drama production would be fun.
Speaker 10:The kid's right, we're doing a story about a servant.
Speaker 11:I'm not a kid, mister Garcia.
Speaker 9:Last summer the play was about.
Speaker 2:Gideon, a hero.
Speaker 5:Aliezar was a hero. Think of it this way. In a typical hero story, the hero has a quest, a mission to carry out, right.
Speaker 10:Yeah, yeah, what's a quest?
Speaker 5:Well, Natalia, it's a search for something precious or an important or dangerous assignment you've been given.
Speaker 2:Like a king sending his nights out on an expedition.
Speaker 5:Exactly. Eliezar had a quest. Abraham sent him on a very important mission.
Speaker 10:What kind of quest?
Speaker 5:Abraham sent him to find a wife for his son, Isaac.
Speaker 11:You're gonna talk about romance again, aren't you.
Speaker 5:I'm afraid so, Lily, But it won't be as bad as you think. Romance doesn't necessarily mean mushy and sentimental.
Speaker 11:It doesn't.
Speaker 3:No.
Speaker 5:Romance means a story that depicts adventure and heroic deeds.
Speaker 12:Mister Garcia is right. I learned that working at the library.
Speaker 5:But servants aren't heroic. Let me explain the story to you guys.
Speaker 11:Promise you won't get too mushy.
Speaker 7:I promise.
Speaker 5:Now listen everyone. Eliezar wasn't just a servant. He was Abraham's STUDI He was in charge of everything he owned, and Abraham was a very rich man.
Speaker 1:So Aliezer was like Abraham's manager.
Speaker 5:Right logan an extremely important position. In fact, Abraham trusted Aliaezar so much that at one point he made Aliazar his heir.
Speaker 10:What's an air?
Speaker 5:An air is the person who would inherit all of Abraham's property, herds, and belongings. But when Abraham and Sarah finally had their miracle son, then Isaac became his father's heir.
Speaker 1:Wait, so Abraham asked Eliezer to find a wife for Isaac.
Speaker 2:But Isaac was the guy who had replaced him.
Speaker 5:Oh that's one way of looking at it.
Speaker 11:Why would Eliezer agree to do that? Wasn't he jealous of Isaac?
Speaker 7:I would have been jealous.
Speaker 8:Eliezer would have been like a gazillionare if Isaac had it come.
Speaker 5:Along, Eliezar left God, and he knew Isaac was the child God had promised to Abraham, so he agreed to travel through rough, dangerous country to find the perfect wife Isaac. And he did it riding a camel, which isn't exactly comfortable.
Speaker 12:That sounds pretty heroic, doesn't it.
Speaker 5:Now let's talk about who's going to play which parts. Logan, I'd like you to play a liaiser.
Speaker 1:Sure thing, mister Garcia.
Speaker 5:And Harold, how'd you like to be Isaac Jenet? You'd make a great Rebecca.
Speaker 2:Mister Garcia, Why is that rock moving across the stage?
Speaker 5:Moving across?
Speaker 12:Uh?
Speaker 8:Oh, where's Hugo?
Speaker 11:I'd check under that rock if I were you, Hugo.
Speaker 6:It looks like Hugo and Jackson aren't taking mister Garcia's drama class very seriously. But at least mister Garcia seems to have made progress getting the campers to see how amazing the story of Eliezar really is. Hattie's pottery craft didn't go as planned. She's feeling well, you'll see, Pattie, I brought you some raspberry bars.
Speaker 16:How is the lemonade challenge going so far?
Speaker 2:Michelle? It was awful?
Speaker 17:You mean the campers didn't like the idea of making their own lemonade mug.
Speaker 2:Not just some of the campers, all of the boys and a few of the girls too.
Speaker 11:I don't understand.
Speaker 16:I thought it was a brilliant idea.
Speaker 2:They didn't understand at all. I wanted them to learn to serve others, to make people feel welcome and care for, to learn how to use the lemonade challenge, to get to know people better, and to introduce them to Jesus.
Speaker 16:They didn't understand any of it.
Speaker 2:Well, that's why I wanted James here. I thought maybe he would have a more exciting way of describing at all.
Speaker 11:But James didn't want to He had.
Speaker 2:Other responsibilities as a sports director.
Speaker 16:I get it.
Speaker 11:What's funny.
Speaker 2:Too bad James couldn't have shown up to do the ropes course demonstration. That might have gotten attention.
Speaker 11:Speaking of James, what about him? He's here, Hattie, I had better be going now.
Speaker 16:Enjoy the raspberry bars.
Speaker 2:They're fresh out of the oven.
Speaker 5:Thanks Michelle, Hattie.
Speaker 1:Oh, you've been crying. What's wrong?
Speaker 16:Everything?
Speaker 2:Everything's wrong?
Speaker 1:Want to talk about it?
Speaker 2:I wanted was for you to be here this morning.
Speaker 1:I'm sorry. I was just busy campers.
Speaker 2:Might have been more excited about the lemonade challenge if you'd explained it.
Speaker 1:I'm not so sure.
Speaker 2:Well, I am, you're the cool guy. You do rock climbing and building ropes courses, and I just teach them how to use clay.
Speaker 1:But but that doesn't mean they'll listen to me.
Speaker 2:Serving others is. It's tough. Samurai warriors served.
Speaker 1:Others samurais now that's in.
Speaker 2:Yes, the Samurai were more than warriors. Their job was to serve their leader and protect and serve the people around them.
Speaker 7:That's epic.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I read that the name Samurai means.
Speaker 1:To serve, just like Christians are called to be servants.
Speaker 2:That's why I wanted you here this morning. You could have explained all that.
Speaker 1:But you just explained it, and it's interesting.
Speaker 2:Yeah, okay, Now what did you want to talk to me about?
Speaker 1:Well, you know, you know how much I appreciated having Bible states together even though I was away at school.
Speaker 2:Right, it wasn't quite the same as being in person, but at least modern technology gave us that option.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and I know we kind of talked about getting to know each other better.
Speaker 2:James, are you freaking up with me because you can't. We're not even dating.
Speaker 1:Well, no, no, no, I don't want to date you.
Speaker 2:Well that was harsh.
Speaker 1:No, I ugh, that didn't sound right. I don't want to date you.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's received loud and clear.
Speaker 1:I want to court you. You want to what I want to court you? Look, hattie, I've done a lot of things wrong in my life, but I want to do this right.
Speaker 2:And that's why you don't want to date me.
Speaker 1:Yes, because I want something more than that. I know courting sounds old.
Speaker 2:Fashioned, Yeah it does.
Speaker 1:But dating today just sounds like it's all about fun. That's not what I'm talking about.
Speaker 2:Okay, that makes sense.
Speaker 1:I think I want something more intentional.
Speaker 2:More intentional.
Speaker 1:Well, this past year, the more time I spent with God, the more I've realized that God does want us to be careless with our relationship.
Speaker 2:So you want us to court?
Speaker 1:Yes, to prayerfully and purposely explore whether marriage is in God's plans for us? So what do you think?
Speaker 2:Well, James, Hole, I think you have yourself a deal.
Speaker 1:I was very nervous. I mean you were sad and crying and oh no, you're.
Speaker 16:Crying again this time they're happy tears.
Speaker 6:Hattie certainly sounded happy, didn't she direct her Doug?
Speaker 5:She sure did.
Speaker 18:James obviously gave this a lot of thought, and I agree with him. We shouldn't be careless with someone else's heart.
Speaker 3:No.
Speaker 6:Seeking God's will for us is especially important when it comes to something huge like choosing our spouse. And Hattie and James are in their late twenties.
Speaker 18:They're at the right age to figure this all out. It'll be interesting to see how their time at camp together goes.
Speaker 10:Do you think wedding mails are in their future?
Speaker 6:I don't know, But what I do know is that they're making the right decision to let God lead them.
Speaker 7:Well, that's always a good decision.
Speaker 6:Hope Patty's idea to have the kids learn about service through the lemonade challenge turns out to be a good decision.
Speaker 18:It didn't start off well though, but the idea is good. Remember that verse Addison talked about.
Speaker 6:Oh right, Romans twelve thirteen.
Speaker 18:That's the one supply the needs of God's people extend hospitality to strangers.
Speaker 6:Some versions, I think even say practice hospitality.
Speaker 18:God wants us to lead lives focused on loving and serving others.
Speaker 6:The drama production is based on a Bible story about a man who did just that. Eliezar served Abraham faithfully, didn't he.
Speaker 18:Yes, he did, even when it wasn't easy.
Speaker 6:So listeners, exercise your faith by asking God to show you ways that you can serve others this.
Speaker 18:Week, and we'll see you here next time.
