Lucas: Hi everyone, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I am Lucas.

Luna: And I am Luna. It is good to be back with you all.

Lucas: We are on episode two hundred forty six today.

Luna: That is a big number. But we keep it small, right?

Lucas: Exactly. Small steps. Last time we talked about dancing and singing.

Luna: Yes. Menari and menyanyi. That was fun.

Lucas: It was energetic. Today we want something quieter.

Luna: Quiet? Like reading? Or writing?

Lucas: Spot on. Reading and writing. Two very common actions.

Luna: I love these because I do them every day.

Lucas: Let us start with the first word. The verb for reading.

Luna: Is it baca?

Lucas: Close. In standard Malay, we add a prefix. Membaca.

Luna: Membaca.

Lucas: Membaca. This means to read.

Luna: Membaca. I like how it starts with M.

Lucas: Right. Membaca. Now let me say it slowly for you.

Luna: Okay. I am listening.

Lucas: Membaca. Membaca.

Luna: Membaca. Membaca.

Lucas: Good. You got the rhythm. Membaca.

Luna: Membaca. What does it mean exactly?

Lucas: It means to read. As in looking at words and understanding them.

Luna: Ah. Membaca. To read.

Lucas: Yes. Now let us put it in a sentence. A simple one.

Luna: I am ready.

Lucas: I am currently reading a book. Saya sedang membaca buku.

Luna: Saya sedang membaca buku.

Lucas: Very good. Let us break that down. Saya means I.

Luna: Yes. Saya.

Lucas: Sedang means currently or in the process of doing something.

Luna: Like right now.

Lucas: Exactly. Right now. Membaca is read. Buku is book.

Luna: So: I currently read book. Saya sedang membaca buku.

Lucas: Perfect translation. Membaca.

Luna: Membaca. Saya sedang membaca buku.

Lucas: Let us try it again together. Slowly.

Luna: Okay. Membaca.

Lucas: Membaca. And the sentence.

Luna: Saya sedang membaca buku.

Lucas: There you go. You are doing great.

Luna: Thanks, Lucas. That felt easy.

Lucas: It should be. Now for the second verb. Writing.

Luna: Writing. Tulis?

Lucas: Again, we use the prefix. Menulis.

Luna: Menulis.

Lucas: Menulis. This means to write.

Luna: Menulis. To write.

Lucas: Listen to the difference between Membaca and Menulis.

Luna: Membaca... Menulis.

Lucas: Yes. Both start with an M sound. Membaca. Menulis.

Luna: They are similar but distinct. I can hear it.

Lucas: Good ear. Now let us make a sentence with Menulis.

Luna: He is writing a letter. Dia menulis surat.

Lucas: Wait. We did not use sedang here. Why?

Luna: Oh. Because he is just writing. Not necessarily right now?

Lucas: Or maybe he is known for writing letters generally. But let us stick to the pattern we learned.

Luna: Okay. So: He is currently writing a letter.

Lucas: Dia sedang menulis surat.

Luna: Dia sedang menulis surat.

Lucas: Dia means he or she. Sedang is the current marker.

Luna: Menulis is write. Surat is letter.

Lucas: Correct. Surat. Can you repeat that?

Luna: Surat. S-u-r-a-t. Surat.

Lucas: Good. Menulis. Surat.

Luna: Menulis surat. Writing a letter.

Lucas: Let us combine them. Read and write.

Luna: Membaca and Menulis.

Lucas: Membaca. Menulis.

Luna: I can read. I can write.

Lucas: In Malay: Saya boleh membaca. Saya boleh menulis.

Luna: Boleh means can or able to.

Lucas: Yes. Ability. Saya boleh membaca. Saya boleh menulis.

Luna: Saya boleh membaca. Saya boleh menulis.

Lucas: You are sounding very natural.

Luna: Thank you. It feels good to learn new tools.

Lucas: Before we continue, we want to talk about Fexingo.

Luna: Yes. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress...

Lucas: we deliberately don't run ads on these episodes.

Luna: If you want to support that choice, the link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo.

Lucas: Your support keeps the show clean and focused.

Luna: Thanks for listening. Now back to our verbs.

Lucas: Let us practice the full sentences again.

Luna: I am reading a book.

Lucas: Saya sedang membaca buku.

Luna: Saya sedang membaca buku.

Lucas: He is writing a letter.

Luna: Dia sedang menulis surat.

Lucas: Dia sedang menulis surat.

Luna: That was smooth.

Lucas: It was. Remember Membaca and Menulis.

Luna: Membaca. Menulis.

Lucas: Try to use them today. Read something in Malay.

Luna: Or write a short note. Just one sentence.

Lucas: One sentence is enough. Progress is progress.

Luna: I will try. Thanks, Lucas.

Lucas: My pleasure. See you next time.

Luna: Bye everyone. Practice these till we chat again.
