Episode notes

After drinks in Redwood City, Miguel walked away feeling hopeful. Hannah was bright, curious, and honest about how exhausting dating in your thirties can feel. No awkward moments, no forced conversation. Just a solid, relaxed vibe. Then… silence. This episode explores how dates that feel “good” don’t always turn into something more. Speaker 1:It's Marcus.

Speaker 2:Time for second date update. Let's just get started. Bringing Miguel on right now. What's up, Miguel?

Speaker 3:How you doing, Marcus?

Speaker 1:I'm good, man. I don't want to bust you up. Miguel got ghosted. We might as well. Like, who hasn't been there, to be honest?

Speaker 2:So what we're trying to figure out is if we can get this girl Hannah on the phone, if we can get her to agree to a second date, at the very least, we need to close the chapter.

Speaker 1:On this and get you some answers, right?

Speaker 3:Yeah, no, exactly.

Speaker 2:I don't even want to put that in the universe. So let's go for a second date. So tell me about the first date. I understand you guys met online, roll it out.

Speaker 1:How'd it go?

Speaker 3:It went really well. Like we chatted for a while. She was already smart. And, and, uh, you know, messaging isn't always my favorite thing, but, um, we had like a nice rapport and, um, we met for drinks, you know? And like you said, I mean, you know, ghosting is pretty common now. So sure. But this one was a weird one because it just went so well, you know, like not only was she nice on, um, when we were messaging back in person, she was still funny. She was bright. She was really thoughtful. She's one of those girls.

Speaker 3:She's like really listens and then ask follow up questions. Like, you know, that she's listening. You know what I mean? I feel great. We talked, you know, we talked about like life work, what it's like dating your thirties and stuff.

Speaker 4:Sure.

Speaker 3:We even touched on politics and it wasn't even that bad. I was like, wow, she's super open. I don't know. I thought things were pretty solid. We were both really relaxed. Looked pretty comfortable. And it just felt like one of those things like, all right, probably going to lead to another date.

Speaker 1:And here we are.

Speaker 3:All right.

Speaker 1:Well, I'll tell you what.

Speaker 3:And here we are.

Speaker 1:Let's call her. Let's see if we can get you a second date. Here we go. Go ahead and mute your phone.

Speaker 2:Hello?

Speaker 1:Hi, I'm looking for Hannah, please.

Speaker 4:This is she.

Speaker 2:Hannah, this is Marcus from Star 101.3. I do the morning show.

Speaker 1:How are you? Wait, what is this?

Speaker 2:It's Star 101.3 radio out of San Francisco. I don't suppose you listen in the morning?

Speaker 4:Oh, not usually. This is a radio show is calling me right now?

Speaker 3:Yes.

Speaker 2:So I do the morning show. And every morning we have this situation. It's called second date update. And we try to bring people together after our first date. So we got floated your phone number by a guy who says that he had a great time with you on a date. And he feels like you ghosted. And we're just trying to figure some things out. Do you have a moment? Do you mind being on the air? And do you mind talking about your date with Miguel?

Speaker 4:Oh, my God.

Speaker 1:That's a lot. I know. Hi. Good morning.

Speaker 3:Oh God.

Speaker 4:Um, yeah.

Speaker 1:Do you have a sec?

Speaker 4:Sure. Why not?

Speaker 1:So my guy would like to take you out again. Did you ghost?

Speaker 4:Um, I hate to say yeah. Cause I think that's kind of shitty, but yeah.

Speaker 3:I did.

Speaker 2:Can you tell us why he's just trying to better himself maybe, or maybe we could get a second date out of this.

Speaker 1:I don't know. What are your thoughts? What happened?

Speaker 3:Oh God.

Speaker 4:Um, you know, pretty much immediately everything was pretty off. Um, I would say from the very beginning of our, our date, he was like trying to guess what I was going to say next. Like he was actively trying to finish my sentence, like not in a rude way or like aggressive way, but just like too confident, you know, like, and usually wrong. Like Like I'd be saying something and he'd be like, oh, you're about to say that you hate that. And I'm like, no, I actually was going to say that I love that. Like, let me finish.

Speaker 4:And it was like, he did that so many times where it's like, hey, we're just trying to get to know each other. stop cutting me off and trying to like finish each other's sandwiches here. Like, let me just, let me talk.

Speaker 1:Okay.

Speaker 3:Frozen.

Speaker 1:I see.

Speaker 4:Yeah. It was, so that was like off putting. Right.

Speaker 1:And then, um, I mean, maybe he was just nervous. This is where you tell me there's other stuff.

Speaker 4:Oh God.

Speaker 3:Yeah.

Speaker 4:Well, you know, when we like chatted a little bit before we met in person and like, this was not the same energy at all.

Speaker 1:Oh, and you were great.

Speaker 4:I mean, he's not wrong.

Speaker 1:I mean, he's not wrong. Oh my God.

Speaker 4:No, but then like, as it kept going, like he kept calling everything cute. Like, like that was cute. And, and like pointing, like looking around and like pointing at the glassware and being like, this is cute. And then I, I'm like, you know, he's asking me questions on sort of explaining things about my life. And he'll kind of, again, like interrupt me and be like, you're so cute when you explain that. And it's like, it didn't feel playful. It feels like that's like a line he just keeps in his pocket, you know?

Speaker 2:Okay, so it felt kind of, not forced, but performative?

Speaker 3:Very performative, yes.

Speaker 1:Premeditated? Were you out at that point?

Speaker 4:I was kind of out from the beginning, from the finishing my sentences and, like, trying to read my mind so incorrectly. But then... He kept being like, so how am I doing here? Like, is this still fun? Are you still having fun right now? Like, are we vibing right now? Like, are we hitting it off? And it's just like, bro, like it was reading very insecure.

Speaker 1:Okay. I get it. All right.

Speaker 2:So let me just, let me stop you only because Miguel is actually listening. We're trying to use this as a teachable moment. So he's been listening in. And I'd love to bring him on just to, just to discuss Miguel. Are you hearing what she's saying? Is it making sense?

Speaker 3:Not really. Cause she's saying like, it's from the very beginning, she was basically out, but it seemed like we were laughing. And I mean, I just want to kind of address some of the things that she said, right? Like finishing your sentences. She's taking it like seriously, like super seriously, like, uh, it was, it's a, it was playful. Like I, I like to connect, you know, I want to show her I'm listening as much as she was showing me. She was listening. Like I wasn't the only one, you know, cutting each other off. And, and, and then when I say cute, you know, I didn't, she's saying it's like, I don't know, like I'm diminishing her that she said something like that. Um, it was just flirting. It's like what I wanted to let her know, like, Oh, you know, I'm interested in you also. Cause you're a beautiful girl.

Speaker 3:Like it's cute. Not like, you're dumb or something. You're like some little kid. It wasn't everything. It was like her.

Speaker 1:Do you do this with all your dates?

Speaker 3:I mean, it's how I flirt. I thought it was light. It's nothing big or anything.

Speaker 1:Okay. What about this weird checking in?

Speaker 3:I like being upfront and communicative. I personally don't like guessing.

Speaker 4:Sure.

Speaker 1:Hannah, these weren't the vibes you were looking.

Speaker 4:For, though? I mean, that's a pretty big simplification of what happened. And I'm all for good, healthy communication too, but it felt like a performance review, not a date. And it didn't feel relaxed or fun. I felt like everything was very like, almost like he'd rehearsed this thing in his head before he got here. It was like he was forcing on me this like pre-scripted date that he'd gone through in his head. And it was so different than talking to him online.

Speaker 1:All right. Well, can we, um, I mean, he likes you. Can we try this again? Maybe a second date?

Speaker 4:It was too needy and it was a big turnoff for me. So I'm going to say no.

Speaker 3:All right.

Speaker 1:Fair enough.

Speaker 3:Hang on.

Speaker 1:Hang on, man.

Speaker 3:All right.

Speaker 1:Second date update.
