SPEAKER_00:So are you looking to become an AI security engineer in 2026?

SPEAKER_02:Yeah, which is a great goal, by the way.

SPEAKER_00:It really is. But um I'm guessing you might be feeling completely overwhelmed by just the the absolute alphabet soup of new certifications out there right now.

SPEAKER_02:Oh, it is a mess out there for sure.

SPEAKER_00:Right. And that is exactly what our mission is for this deep dive today. We've got this huge stack of sources from practical DevSecOps.

SPEAKER_02:Yeah, their 2026 course catalog mostly.

SPEAKER_00:Exactly. The catalog, plus some really eye-opening industry blog posts they've put out recently. And we're gonna use all this to figure out, you know, which of these certs actually prove your skills and which ones are just, well, just testing your memory.

SPEAKER_02:Which is a huge distinction.

SPEAKER_00:It is. So okay, let's unpack this because there is a staggering stat from the sources we need to talk about. According to an IBM 2025 report, of all the organizations hit by an AI breach, 97% of them had zero AI access controls in place. None.

SPEAKER_02:I mean 97% is just wild. But honestly, it kind of makes sense when you look at the industry.

SPEAKER_00:Wait, really? How does that make sense?

SPEAKER_02:Well, because the demand is just moving too fast, right? Like the demand for AI red teaming, which is, you know, ethically hacking these systems to find flaws, it's projected to grow by 35% by 2028.

SPEAKER_00:35%? That's massive.

SPEAKER_02:It is. The industry is just desperate for people who can actually secure these systems.

SPEAKER_00:Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:But um to understand which new AI cert to pick, we kind of first need to understand why our old cybersecurity certs are well, why they're failing us in the AI era.

SPEAKER_00:Right. Because we all have those classic certs, right? So what's the missing theory there?

SPEAKER_02:Aaron Powell So traditional certifications are great. They're amazing for like network security or cloud architecture, traditional app security.

SPEAKER_00:Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:But they completely skip AI-specific threats. They just do not cover them.

SPEAKER_00:Aaron Powell Right. And there was this analogy in the sources that I love that said relying on traditional certs for AI is um it's basically like building a state-of-the-art bank vault to protect your money.

SPEAKER_02:Oh yeah, I saw this one.

SPEAKER_00:Aaron Powell But you're completely ignoring that your new AI bank teller is just like happily giving away the vault combination to anyone who asks nicely.

SPEAKER_02:Aaron Powell Exactly. It's it's a perfect way to look at it. And you know, if we connect this to the bigger picture, this massive gap has led to just a flood of new AI certs.

SPEAKER_00:Aaron Powell Right. Everyone's rushing in to fill the void.

SPEAKER_02:Aaron Powell Yeah, but a lot of them are making the same old mistakes. They're relying purely on theoretical knowledge instead of practical application. Aaron Powell Okay.

SPEAKER_00:So that leads right into the core problem with most of these new certs on the market, right? Like how they actually assess you.

SPEAKER_02:Aaron Powell Exactly. It's the assessment style. You basically have two camps right now.

SPEAKER_00:Trevor Burrus Right. So on one hand, you have the theory exams.

SPEAKER_02:Aaron Powell Yes. Stuff like COMPTIE's SECAI Plus or Isaac's AAIZM. These rely really heavily on multiple choice questions, just you know, A, B, C, or D.

SPEAKER_00:And then on the other side, you've got the practical exams, like the certified AI security professional, the C A I C.

SPEAKER_02:Right, which literally forces you to attack live systems.

SPEAKER_00:Okay, but wait, let me push back on this for a second. Because isn't theory important? I mean, a multiple choice test can ask you to like define what prompt injection is. What is that missing theory failing to capture?

SPEAKER_02:Oh, this is such a good question. Because theory teaches you the what. It teaches you what a vulnerability is. But multiple choice tests, they measure recall, you know, not skill.

SPEAKER_00:Right. Did you memorize the flashcard?

SPEAKER_02:Exactly. It completely misses the messy, unpredictable reality of actually bypassing a live bot's guardrails. Because live systems are they're not predictable.

SPEAKER_00:So what are the critical skills that multiple choice is missing then?

SPEAKER_02:It's the actual execution. Like executing a prompt injection on a live target or exploiting the OWASP LLM top ten vulnerabilities in real time.

SPEAKER_00:Right, actually doing it.

SPEAKER_02:Yeah. Or poisoning a training pipeline.

SPEAKER_00:Yeah.

SPEAKER_02:You have to use miter atlas tactics and and this is the biggest one. You have to know how to patch the system after you break it.

SPEAKER_00:Oh wow. Yeah. A multiple choice question definitely isn't testing if you can write a patch.

SPEAKER_02:Not at all.

SPEAKER_00:So if theory isn't enough, how exactly do practical lab exams bridge that gap? Like how do they prove you're actually ready for the job?

SPEAKER_02:Well, they simulate the actual work environment.

SPEAKER_00:Right. And here's where it gets really interesting because the structure of the CAIS, let me just break this down for the listener. It features over 30 browser-based labs.

SPEAKER_02:Yeah, real targets.

SPEAKER_00:Real targets. And get this no local VM setup.

SPEAKER_02:Which is huge, right? Because anyone who has done IT certs knows setting up local virtual machines is just it's a nightmare.

SPEAKER_00:It's the worst. You spend more time troubleshooting your VM than studying. So with CASP, you're not just bubbling in letters on a Scantron. The exam itself is five real challenges. And you have six hours to solve them. And then after that, you have a 24-hour window to submit a full written report.

SPEAKER_02:And that structure, I mean, it completely shifts the grading metric. It changes it from, you know, did you remember the definition to did your attack actually work? Right. And more importantly, did your patch fix it? Because that is the exact loop an AI security engineer performs on the job every single day.

SPEAKER_00:You find the bug, you exploit it, you patch it, you write the report. Exactly. Okay, so once you've decided you want a practical cert like this, you have to look at the barriers to entry because they're not all created equal.

SPEAKER_02:Oh, absolutely not. The prerequisites are a whole other story.

SPEAKER_00:Right. Let's talk about the gatekeeping here. Because I was looking at the sources and the AASM, it flat out refuses candidates who don't have an active CSM or C I S S P.

SPEAKER_02:Yeah. Which is kind of crazy when you think about it.

SPEAKER_00:I mean, a CISP usually requires what, like five years of experience?

SPEAKER_02:At least. So you've got this arbitrary wall. But by contrast, CISP has no wall like that. You just need basic Linux skills and um a scripting language like Python to get started.

SPEAKER_00:That makes so much more sense for an emerging field. And then there's the money side of things. Let's compare the financial structure.

SPEAKER_01:This is where it really diverges.

SPEAKER_00:Yeah. So SEC AI Plus costs$359, but it expires in three years.

SPEAKER_01:Right. You're on the clock.

SPEAKER_00:And then AAISM is between$459 and$599, but you have to do annual CPEs, continuing professional education, and pay ongoing fees every year. But the CASP, it costs$1,099 up front, which sounds like a lot.

SPEAKER_02:Right. And well, this raises an important question regarding true value because CISP is more expensive initially, but it is valid for life.

SPEAKER_00:For life. No recertification fees at all.

SPEAKER_02:None. And it actually awards you 36 CPE points that you can use for your other certs.

SPEAKER_00:It's like, well, it's like renting your credentials versus buying the house. With the annual fees, you're just renting. With the lifetime value model, you own it.

SPEAKER_02:I love that analogy. You buy the house and you prove you can actually do the maintenance on it too.

SPEAKER_00:Exactly. So what does this all mean for you? If you want to tap into this crazy lucrative AI security market, I mean, top salaries are pushing$237,000 right now.

SPEAKER_02:Which is just it's incredible.

SPEAKER_00:That's life-changing money. But to get there, you need to choose a certification that actually proves to hiring managers you can do the work, you know, not just memorize a glossary of terms.

SPEAKER_02:Absolutely. Hiring managers are getting smarter about this. They want to see practical skills.

SPEAKER_00:Right. Which leaves us with this kind of this final provocative thought from all the source material. As these certifications abandon multiple choice tests for like live browser-based hacking labs, how long until the traditional job interview follows suit?

SPEAKER_02:Aaron Powell Oh, that is a fascinating question.

SPEAKER_00:Right. Like, will the days of sitting in a conference room just talking about your cybersecurity skills, will that just be gone? Replaced entirely by an interviewer sliding a laptop across the table and saying, Don't tell me your skills, hack our AI right now.

SPEAKER_02:I mean, I would be shocked if we don't see that become the standard in the next few years.

SPEAKER_00:Aaron Powell It really feels inevitable. So, you know, you better be ready to actually do the work.

SPEAKER_02:Be ready to hack.

SPEAKER_00:Yep. Well, that wraps it up for today. Thanks for taking this deep dive with us, and we'll catch you on the next one.
