Speaker 1:This is the catch-up on three things by the Indian Express and I'm Ichha Sharma. Today is the 2nd of October and here are this week's headlines. Starting with major news, the Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the One Nation, One Election bills yesterday cancelled a visit to the Supreme Court in scheduled for 6th October, days after an agenda circulated among its members said the panel would hold an informal discussion with the Chief Justice of India and other judges on simultaneous elections. The Lok Sabha Secretariat informed members yesterday evening that the local study visit to the Supreme Court had been cancelled. No reason was given in the communication. Committee Chairperson and BJP MP PP Chaudhary, however, said, The visit was not meant for discussing the proposed legislation with the judges.
Speaker 1:In other major news, political temperatures are on the rise in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the October 16 Rajya Sabha elections, with the BJP and Samajwadi party preparing for a closely fought contest. The BJP and SP have the numbers to win seven and two seats, respectively, out of the ten at stake. However, a contest is likely to play out for the remaining seat, with the SP already announcing two candidates and planning to field a third. The timing of the polls adds to the intrigue as they come months before the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, likely to be held early next year. Given the fears of cross-voting, a senior BJP leader said the party was keeping tabs on its legislators.
Speaker 1:If the BJP loses out to the SP's third candidate due to cross-voting, it will send an adverse message to the people ahead of the assembly elections. Meanwhile, India's new fuel efficiency rules for passenger vehicles will force carmakers to increasingly manage the efficiency of their entire vehicle portfolio rather than individual models from April 2027. The final corporate average fuel economy, Third Framework, notified on 29 September, has introduced a new formula to relax norms for smaller cars, while doing away with an earlier proposed special concession for the category, and gives electric vehicles the biggest compliance benefit among the different partainers. In other major news this week, five people, including three students and two outsiders, have been arrested in connection with the violence and vandalism at Lovely Professional University in Fagwara last week, with investigators now moving from cases registered against unidentified persons to naming those allegedly involved on the basis of CCTV and digital evidence, as senior Punjab police officer said this week. All five were produced before
Speaker 1:a local court, which remanded them in three-day police custody for further questioning. Kapurtala SSP Gaurav Dura confirmed that the accused were arrested on the basis of CCTV footage and other digital evidence gathered during the investigation. He, however, did not disclose the specific role allegedly played by the five and said police were collating details of those held and senior officers would share further information with the media to date.
Speaker 1:And in the end, in news making global headlines, newly obtained records from Cornell University's internal investigation have provided a detailed account of the weeks between a 2024 fraternity party and a woman's decision to report allegations of sexual assault, while a reopened criminal investigation and calls for changes to New York law have put the case back under national scrutiny. A woman identified in court documents as Jane Doe, initially did not describe herself as a rape victim after a night at Cornell University's Chiefy Fraternity House in October 2024.
Speaker 1:But newly reported details from the university's Title VI proceedings show how her understanding of the encounter appeared to change in the weeks that followed, eventually leading her to report the incident to campus police and seek a rape examination. With that, this was all for this week. This was the catch up on three things by the Indian Express.
