Speaker 1:This is the catch-up on three things by the Indian Express and I'm Ichha Sharma. Today is the 9th of October and here are this week's headlines. Starting with major news, a 24-hour mobile internet block has been ordered in central Delhi. From 10pm tonight, ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party's Saturday protest at Jantar Mantar, to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Mobile internet services will be blocked within a four-kilometre radius from Janpath Kartavya Path crossing, Manishi Chandra, the Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police, said in a notification released this evening. Massive protests are expected in central Delhi and other parts of the city, with CJP protesters and members, democracy activists and opposition parties and lawmakers taking to the streets, to demand Kumar quit over alleged irregularities in the special intensive revision, i.e., the voter re-verification exercise. In other major news, expressing concern over the restrictions on public transport announced ahead of the Cochrane Janata Party protest tomorrow, the Supreme Court has asked the government to ensure everything is not brought
Speaker 1:to a halt and that citizens don't face difficulties. The court also urged the authorities to follow the principle of proportionality. If you have to avoid certain things, do it only to the extent that makes sure you are avoiding it. But it does not mean that you will use a hammer to kill a fly, the Supreme Court said. Meanwhile, Union Minister and LJP RV Chief Chirag Paswan said today that no one can stop the youth of India and connectivity cannot be disrupted for a long time. amid cancellation of trains to the national capital and restrictions ordered on Delhi Metro services. Chirag, a key NDA ally, said, Which loosely translates to, they are the youth of India, no one can stop them. Those who are trying to create such illusions are How many trains can one stop? How much connectivity can one disrupt? In other major news this week, the BJP today retained Nadigram by a record margin and also won the minority-dominated constituency of Reginagar, underlining its dominance in West Bengal politics. A call to Muslims on a development pitch, the alleged police pressure on opposition candidates and leaders,
Speaker 1:a personal campaign by the chief minister and a divided opposition culminated in a victory in these two seats, which was the first electoral test for both the ruling party and the opposition in Bengal after the assembly polls. And in the end, we take a look at news making global headlines. Navanetham Nevi Pillai won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting peace and international law. One of the early chapters of Pillai's legal career was her working during South Africa's apartheid era, including cases involving anti-apartheid activists and political prisoners. The period was marked by Rivonial Trial, a landmark case that led to Nelson Mandela and seven other anti-apartheid activists being sentenced to life imprisonment. Pillai successfully fought for the rights and privileges of political prisoners held on the island. Pillai was also part of a defense team during a trial under the Terrorism Act in 1971-72 which sought to expose what the defense describes as unlawful and torturous methods used during interrogation. And with that, this was all for this week. This was the catch-up on
