Speaker 1:Pushkin. The fall of two thousand and seven, Keith Giamanco was in serious financial trouble, so he came up with a bold plan to save his family.

Speaker 2:I felt such desperation. I felt it was what I had to do.

Speaker 1:At the time, did it seem like a crazy idea?

Speaker 2:It seemed very crazy, but I felt a sense of being so desperate that I felt it was the quickest, easiest way out.

Speaker 1:To all who knew him, Keith was a mild mannered suburban dad, but secretly he became someone else, a master of disguise.

Speaker 2:I wasn't very good looking anyone in the eye. You can't share anything like that with someone else if you do your.

Speaker 1:Had Eventually, the police showed up one night when his teenage daughters were home alone, wondering where their dad was.

Speaker 3:Recognize seriousness, because they wouldn't have sent an entire crime scene unit out to my house if it wasn't serious. They didn't send one or two dudes. They sent a whole van of people plus dogs.

Speaker 1:Every family has its secrets, but what happens when you discover that your dad has been living a double life.

Speaker 3:It was literally like there is something wrong. I couldn't put my finger on it. But it was anxiety, it was defeat. It was fear. Is everyone lying to me about who they are? I didn't trust anyone after that.

Speaker 1:Soon it wasn't just Keith's daughters who had to deal with his lies. It was friends, neighbors, investigators, prosecutors, and ultimately Keith himself.

Speaker 2:Came up and then proceeded to take his hand and put it into his jacket.

Speaker 3:Mike, he had a weapon.

Speaker 1:You can't put that many people in that much fear and not expect to pay a heavy price for it.

Speaker 2:Okay, before I ask you any questions, you were advisor your constitutional rights. People say, oh, you made a mistake. No, I didn't make a mistake. Making a mistake is putting salt in your coffee instead of sugar. I made bad choices. Those things were a choice.

Speaker 1:This is a story about the crimes a man will commit in the name of fatherhood. It's about love, deception, and justice, and it's about the disguises parents put on for their children and the world. Deep cover The Familyman, coming May eighteenth from Pushkin Industries. The Limits of Manifesting Success with James Forman, Jr.

When Keith Giammanco started robbing banks in 2007, he sought to minimize his legal risk. Keith says he never carried a weapon, and he confessed to the authorities the same day he was arrested. But, ultimately, he faced two prosecutions - federal and state. And he served nearly two decades in prison. Jake sits down with legal scholar James Forman, Jr. to unpack how this all unfolded, why a lawyer never tries to "manifest success,” and what justice looks like in a case like this.
