Speaker 1:Hi, Ranger Reed here. And Ranger Brooke. Whoa! Look out, Ranger Reed. Welcome to Creation Nuggets. Follow us. The ranger station's just ahead.
Speaker 2:Whoa! Whoa! Oh, good. Thanks for coming into Trekkers in the middle of the night. I promise you, Ranger Reed, you've never seen a bigger mosquito. It's gigantic.
Speaker 1:A mosquito the size of a plum? That sounds like a record size.
Speaker 2:I was working, but I can't work with such a bloodthirsty insect on the loose.
Speaker 1:Never fear, Mr. Simon. Your ranger is near.
Speaker 2:There it is, Ranger Reed. See it hitting the wall as it flies to the ceiling?
Speaker 1:Oh, you have a crane fly aboard. Some people call them mosquito hawks.
Speaker 2:Oh, I like that name. Does it eat mosquitoes? Maybe I want it in Trekkers.
Speaker 1:These insects might look like a giant mosquito with their large wings and long, fragile legs, but they're harmless to humans and to mosquitoes.
Speaker 2:Oh, I guess that's good. Harmless to me, then.
Speaker 1:Yes. As adults, mosquito hawks don't bite or sting. During their short adult life of 10 to 15 days, they're just looking to lay eggs.
Speaker 2:Well, mosquito hawks don't seem to contribute much to our world, except to terrorize innocent store owners in their offices at night.
Speaker 1:Contribute? Well, commonly, the larva of the species feeds on plant roots. This benefits the soil by breaking down organic matter.
Speaker 2:So, during their humble life beneath the ground, they are improving the ground that grows our food?
Speaker 1:Like I always say... All of God's creation is beautiful, amazing, and fascinating, and God's love is there for us to see.
Speaker 2:It reminds me that no matter how small we may feel in this world, God has a place for us to fill in His work.
Speaker 1:Exactly.
Speaker 2:I still don't like how mosquito hawks look. How do I minimize their visits to trekkers?
Speaker 1:They are nocturnal, primarily active at night, and attracted to light, so don't leave your office light on at night. Ah.
Speaker 2:I had the door open for fresh air. Soon it'll be winter, and I'm enjoying the warm air.
Speaker 1:You could open a window. With a screen, unless you want more flies as customers. Oh, no.
Speaker 2:They don't spend any money and scare away the other customers, so... No.
Speaker 1:The mosquito hawks are breeding and laying eggs a little late this year. I'm going back to the ranger station to check last year's records.
Speaker 2:What do we do with the mosquito hawks?
Speaker 1:Tell them... that you look for their larva beneath the ground in January.
Speaker 2:Ranger Reed, since you're here, I have a nice sail on.
Speaker 1:Mr. Simon, I'm not a midnight shopper. Now get on home and turn the light off before your store is a fly shop.
Speaker 2:You got it, Ranger.
Speaker 1:Mountaineers, join us here again next time for more Creation Nuggets, a Discovery Mountain mini-adventure. Discovery Mountain is a production of The Voice of Prophecy.
