Focus. Lie down, close your eyes, and rest. The long days of summer make our energy feel infinite. We might take on new projects, new goals. We feel energized by the long days, the late evenings, the early mornings. They take us out of the hibernation of winter and the seed planting of spring, and they bring us into a time of great productivity. But if we're not careful, we can fritter away all of the beautiful energy of summer on things that don't really matter.
That's why we need to focus our energy. We need to rein in our attention and direct it towards what matters most and not get distracted by all the different things we can be doing with the energy of summer. We are like the rays of a sun warming a meadow, a lake, a mountain, a home. But when we focus the rays of the sun, what happens? We can light a fire. So let's begin with three long, slow breaths together. Inhale. Pause at the top of your inhale and release slowly.
Another one. Our last one together. Inhale. Pause. Exhale slowly, slowly, slowly. Now as we move through today's brain rest, I would like you to continue that breath. Just a simple inhale, pause, exhale slowly. Find your own rhythm for that breath now. And then I would like you to think about all of the things that you have done today. Travel back in time to when you woke up, what you did first, what you did second, third, fourth, and so on. And I would like you to simply observe.
No judgment, no criticism, no blame. Where were you scattering your energy? Where were you filled up with the energy of summer? Spending your energy simply because you have it on things that maybe aren't what matter most to you. Think about how your day might be like the rays of the sun spread wide across the earth warming, but not lighting any fires. Reminder to slow your breath in the background, shifting your physiology to a new space that will facilitate insight, wisdom, and clarity.
Shift your body and your mind will follow. Now bring to mind what happens when you take a magnifying glass out of your pocket and you focus the rays of the sun on a pile of dried leaves. Do you wave the magnifying glass around? No. You hold it steady even if it seems like you're not getting anywhere. Do you see something nearby that looks interesting and go shine your magnifying glass on that? No. You have to stay focused on your objective. Continue to shift your physiology in the background with your breath, the most effective lever you can press to access your innate capacity to heal.
And come back to yourself holding the magnifying glass. Now, what is the real fire that you want to light? What is it that lights you up? What is the most meaningful thing you can invest your precious energy in? And then change your image from a pile of leaves to that to that image. And see the energy coming from yourself through the magnifying glass to that which means the most to you. See your energy fueling what you want most to grow in your life.
Feel it one step more deeply as you breathe. And now see your efforts come to fruition. Let a smile come to the corners of your mouth as you look at what your energy has created. You can put down your magnifying glass and just bask in the glory of your creation. Let's take one final breath together. And take this image with you as you move back into your day as a reminder to focus your energy.
