Speaker 1:As a DVD business goes down, it's going to evolve into the video on demand business. Stephen Hirsch Vivid Entertainment.

Speaker 2:At the end of the day, sex workers are just regular people. Our culture has to end the stigma surrounding not just sex workers, but sex itself. Only then will real change come. Asa Akira performer.

Speaker 3:Information just comes and goes so quickly, or it can be misconstrued. It can be a very sarcastic person, and sometimes people take every word I say literally. Sasha Gray performer.

Speaker 4:No one really buys records anymore. You can look at sales and do that mack real quick. Unfortunately, it's fast food in the music industry. People don't ingest full records anymore. Tommy Lee musician.

Speaker 5:Porno is the last form of entertainment that is a multi billion dollar business that doesn't take care of the people that created.

Speaker 6:There are vocational schools for everything.

Speaker 7:There ought to be one for porn. Kid Rock.

Speaker 8:I will never spread my legs in this industry again.

Speaker 9:Jenna Jamison, Welcome to General World. Welcome back to General World. I'm your host, Molly Lambert. This is episode twelve. Heel Turn. There's only two types of people in the world, the ones that entertain and the ones that observe. Thus spake the great American philosopher Britney spears on the title track of her two thousand and eight album Circus The Year After the First iPhone is released. On January twelfth, two thousand and eight, the twenty fifth Annual Adult Video News Awards ceremony is held at the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Paradise, Nevada, on the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip. Thirty four year old Jenna Jamison takes the stage at the Avens in a necklace with strands of dripping diamonds, black platform heels, and a long silk leopard print dress with super skinny straps that I'd bet money is by designer Roberto Cavalli. Jenna's feathered blonde hair is piled up on the right side of her head with bangs swooping over her right eye. She sports her trademark rim of dark eyeliner and shadow with a frosted nude lip.

Speaker 9:Jenna goes up to the podium mic to present an award named after her, he Jenna Jamison Crossover Star of the Year Award.

Speaker 8:Wow.

Speaker 10:This is monumental.

Speaker 8:Really, I remember getting in this industry when I was eighteen years old. I know a lot of you girls are brand new and this doesn't seem like much to you, but I remember when they were about five hundred people in the audience. So this is huge and I feel really proud that I kind of paved the way for this kind of mainstream exposure.

Speaker 10:And it's apropos that this award is named after me. The crossover Star of the year. Right now, it's been a little bit.

Speaker 8:Of a rocky year for me. I think you're all aware. I've been in the tabloids. Everyone's speculating about what's going on with Jenna.

Speaker 10:Why is she so? Why is she crazy? Why is she divorced? Oh wait, I'm not divorced. Yeah, it's been a crazy year for me. But I do have to say just to bring you all up to speed, because I love you all. You're like my family.

Speaker 8:Everything's beautiful, everything is amazing in my life.

Speaker 10:I have a beautiful man who takes care of me and accepts me. I'm lucky.

Speaker 8:I'm so lucky, and I really want to be honest for a sec and I want to let everybody know that I know us Weekly came out it said that I was retiring, I was done with the industry, and then I had to come back and talk about the fact that I wasn't done because Club Jenna is one of the biggest forces in this industry by far in a way.

Speaker 10:But but honesty is key, and honesty is key.

Speaker 8:I will never ever ever spread my legs again in this industry ever. But I love every one of you and thanks for the support. So moving right along, the nominees for the Crossover Star of the Year are.

Speaker 9:The audience, made up almost entirely of people who work in the adult industry, gasps in shock at Jenna's sudden heel turn. They are stunned by her blatant show of disrespect for the business that made her a wealthy and famous superstar. The audience starts booing Jenna. Her new boyfriend, Tito Ortiz is in the audience. He throws up a piece sign on camera in support of Jenna. Then Jenna lists the names of the nominees for the Jenna Jamison Crossover Star of the Year Award and announces that this year's winner is Stormy Daniels. Stormy Daniels comes on stage to accept her award from Jenna and breaks the tension in the room.

Speaker 3:I love you, Jenna, but I'm going to spread my legs a little longer Stormy Daniels performer.

Speaker 9:The reaction from folks in the porn industry to Jenna's big announcement is swift.

Speaker 11:I don't know what the hell is going on with miss Jamison. When I discovered her, she was a beautiful, little nineteen year old girl. I didn't recognize her at the AVIN Awards last year. She had bones sticking out, but this year her face doesn't even look like Jenna. Randy West performer.

Speaker 9:Meanwhile, another retired porn superstar, Heather Hunter, is still trying to break into mainstream rap music. She finds that while artists love writing rap lyrics about her and being seen with her, that doesn't necessarily help her when it comes to promoting her own music.

Speaker 12:What people may not expect is how serious I am about this. I really want people to take me seriously. Being retired from the adult industry nearly thirteen years ago, I think I've done enough in the mainstream business and I want to be accepted as an equal as an artist. I'm going from my respect whether they give it to me or not. Heather Hunter.

Speaker 9:Performer Heather Hunter puts out a rap album called Double H The Unexpected, working with big name producers like Scott Storch and DJ Premier. She gets back into making art too, debuting her Hunter collection of paintings at the Front Street Gallery in Brooklyn.

Speaker 12:When you come from the adult film business, people feel like that's all you. But I made it happen. I got into music and signed a deal with Island Records, and then I signed with Tommy Boy Records. After that, I've worked with Scott Storch, DJ Premier, y Cleb Jean, and all my friends that were supporting what I was doing and helping me change my life. I wrote a novel and I opened an art gallery in Brooklyn. I had a show on Playboy TV with Sir Mix a Lot, and I ended up getting my own show on BET called The Peep Show. I have two online magazines. You have a lot of adult stars that can't get into magazines like Smooth and Maxim. I'm creating publications to showcase them in a very classy way.

Speaker 9:Heather Hunter, like Jenna, is in many ways almost too ahead of her time. Pretty soon every adult performer will also have to be a multimedia brand with several income streams. While the contract girl model will start to become outmoded, the cult of personality around certain cornstars won't die out with the collapse of the studio system. It will just shift online. Just as Jenna steps down from her post as the queen of porn, a new class of porn stars inspired by Jenna are coming up. These new two thousands porn stars have a different route into the industry as well. The old path that Jenna and most female performers took from stripping to girly mags to adult movies has been washed away. Now there's just one way into the porn industry, the Internet.

Speaker 3:I don't want to segregate it from art, because for me, it is art. I think a lot of people don't look at it that way, but I do.

Speaker 9:In two thousand and six, a new class of performers that will come to define the Internet era of porn enter the industry. Just as Jenna was the porn star who bridged the VHS and DVD eras, these new stars will emerge as the figureheads of the Internet era pornography. One such performer, is a Jean Luke Dard loving goth girl whose stage name is Sasha Gray. Born Marina Ann Hans a Pisces. She grows up in a working class family in Sacramento, California, and gets into porn because she feels like she isn't seeing the kind of content she wants and aims to make it herself. Sasha Gray makes her name with intense extreme sex scenes. She works with performers like Rocco Safreddi, who'd recently returned from retirement. A performer named Joanna Angel, a Jewish capricorn from New York born Joanna mostav starts her own alt porn website called Burning Angel after working for the similarly themed punk porn adult pinup site Suicide Girls and being a contract girl at VCA. Burning Angel brings Club Jenna's model of performers running their own adult studio imprints to the Internet. Another new superstar is Assa a kir Uh.

Speaker 2:I have sex for money, so I'm not a feminist. I portray sexual fantasies on screen for entertainment, so I'm not a feminist. I like to wear makeup and feel sexy, so I'm not a feminist. Fuck you, I'm a feminist.

Speaker 9:Asa Takagami is a five foot one brunette capricorn from New York City. The only child of a photographer father and businesswoman mother, Assa spends her childhood between New York and Tokyo. She goes to a private school for international students her freshman year, gets expelled for low grades and finishes at a public school.

Speaker 2:There was a time in my life when I had a five year plan. I was gonna do porn for two years, save my money and use it to open a yoga studio. But now it's a decade later, and I barely even do yoga anymore.

Speaker 9:Takagami joins the porn industry in two thousand and six using the stage name Asa Akira. She uses her real first name, which translates to Mourning in Japanese, and takes her last name from the nineteen eighty eight cyberpunk anime classic Akira. Akira takes on the position of intelligent, charismatic, feminist public spokesperson for the porn industry, newly vacated by Jenna.

Speaker 2:The fans and supporters are not the problem. It's the people who are anti porn or at least wished to appear so. By anti porn, I don't mean someone who doesn't watch porn. I mean someone who assumes all sex workers must be damaged or morally corrupt. I mean someone who says, oh, but you're too pretty to do porn, refusing to take a woman at her word when she says she chooses to do porn because she wants to. Well, I'm sure many of these people are perfectly nice and well intentioned, and some of them probably even watch porn.

Speaker 2:They're adding to the stigma surrounding sex workers, and we are not second class citizens.

Speaker 9:Sasha Gray also goes on the Tyra Banks Show, where Tyra gives her the exact same full court press that Jerry Springer once gave Jenna. Sasha Gray defends herself in the industry in her trademark deadpan goth style, and Tyra, like Jerry, totally ignores what she's saying. As smartphones become popular in tandem with tube sites, now anyone can access a vast, secret world of pornographic content in their pocket whenever they want. As porn becomes more accessible than ever, getting an audience to pay attention to new releases is also harder than has ever been, so porn, which has always relied on gimmicky premises to catch attention, goes all in.

Speaker 9:Due to how fast culture moves now online, the content cycle is hitting warp speed. So a few days after the two thousand and eight Republican National Convention makes Alaskan god Governor Sarah Palin a topic of national conversation, Hustler Inc. Puts an ad up on Craigslist offering a three thousand dollars sum for a Sarah Palin look alike willing to start in a pornographic film. Within the next ten days, a thirty six year old adult performer named Lisa Ann Corpora answers and wins the role of Sarah Palin. Lisa Ann Ataurus had been in and out of performing since the nineties, also working as a stripper and running a day spot. In two thousand and five, she becomes a talent agent for La Direct Models, scouting female performers who are aged thirty plus for the new boom in milf content.

Speaker 9:While other agencies reject or drop female performers for allegedly aging out. Lisa Anne sees that there is a huge unmet demand for content with women of a certain age with huge tits and big asses. Now, is the milf really a feminist reflection of the shift in women's role since the section, or is it just another impossible beauty standard foisted on women that says they now have to stay hot forever. I'm going with both. I only wish Susan Sontag, who wrote a famous essay lamenting the female beauty standard requiring eternal youthfulness, had lived to see the rise of milk porn. To prepare to play Sarah Palin in the porn parody Who's Nail and Palin, Lisa Ann closely studies Tina Fey's impression of Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live, as well as tapes of Palin at debates.

Speaker 9:She buys her own skirt suits that Macy's and tailors the tops lower and the skirts higher and tighter. The Sarah Palin porn parody raises a lot of new questions about free speech, politics, and sex. The discourse and Republican outrage over Who's Nail in Palin helps promote the movie on programs like the Fox Network show America's Newsroom.

Speaker 13:Your Average American. It's a It's disgusting, it's dirty, They wouldn't want to see it. Is this whole thing actually legal? Might there be some actual confusion to the non educated mind out there? Megan Kelly Fox News, Maybe.

Speaker 3:Some crazy right wing activists will try and burn my house down, But I put myself in that target spot.

Speaker 5:And it is what it is. Lisa Ann performer.

Speaker 9:Megan Kelly has a defense attorney on her Fox show to argue whether Sarah Palin has any legal recourse. The defense attorney suggests that Palin could try seeking an injunction to block the movie's release before the election, but he ultimately thinks there's no case against Hustler because Hustler already won its nineteen ninety eight First Amendment case against Jerry Folwell, which ruled that celebrities cannot sue for parody. Hustler makes sure the film clearly announces itself as parody, which, by the way, is all so the defense we're using for this podcast.

Speaker 13:Whatever you think of Larry Flint, the man knows his First Amendment.

Speaker 9:The Internet introduces new gray areas as to what constitutes parody and whether the average viewer understands that movies are not the same thing as reality. Megan Kelly is also purporting that television news channels like Fox News are depicting an accurate reality, which they are purposely not. But in two thousand and eight, it's still sort of taken for granted that viewers know that screen images are not real life. Is it misogynist to sexualize Sarah Palin and portray her as a ravenous, dumbass milf who fucks Russian soldiers in a fake bill O'Reilly in order to demean her career as a politician?

Speaker 14:Yes?

Speaker 9:Does she suck? Also? Yes, should any politicians fuckability or perceived lack of fuckibility ever be on the table?

Speaker 15:No?

Speaker 9:Is Whose Nail? And Palin Legal? Yes, definitely Who's Nail? In Palin co starring Nina Hartley as Hillary Clinton and Jada Pire as Conda Lisa Rice is released on November fourth, two thousand and eight, election day. It's a huge hit that gets lots of mainstream press coverage, drives Lisa Ann's Google search results way up, and sells a lot of DVDs. Lisa Ann becomes the public face and body of milfporn. It spawns sequels where Lisa Ann's Palin Nails performers playing Barack Obama and David Letterman not at the same time.

Speaker 9:The Nail in Palin sequels debut online with no physical media release planned.

Speaker 6:Right now, the scene is only available online with no plans in the immediate future from putting it on a DVD.

Speaker 10:Rick Hits Hustlers Online.

Speaker 9:Editor Hustler claims that putting the clip up only online drove two hundred and fifty percent more traffic than usual to the site. Internet traffic is the new metric of success rather than DVD sales, but internet traffic doesn't necessarily automatically translate into money the way that DVD sales do. Performers like Lisa Ann are banking on building enough of a following to attract fans to their strip club tour gigs, where they can make real money live in person off customers who saw them in porn films. Some performers also do escorting to make more money, which has moved from the literal back pages of alternative weeklies and adult listings like Hollywood Press onto websites like Backpage. It's becoming harder to monetize performing because of the collapse of physical media sales as well. As the two thousand and eight recession, which cuts down on customers disposable income. Performers and civilian alike are being forced to branch out into side hustles and build out their personal brands online. There's also a new type of work called independent contracting. Classifying workers as

Speaker 9:such enables companies to withhold standard aspects of jobs like health insurance. It's especially prevalent in new industries involving tech, whose move fast, break things ethos means breaking labor laws. An economic downturn begins coinciding with the end of the American Empire, and while adult performers have more control over selling their own content than ever, that control is now subject to the whims of a new class of social media billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg, who punish and shadow band, sex workers, and civilians online for posting whatever content they consider to be lewd, while allowing mainstream celebrities to skirt the rules. When General World returns, Pirates gets a sequel.

Speaker 9:Oh yeah, welcome back to General World digital playgrounds. Pirates gets a sequel with a budget of eight million dollars. Pirates to Stagneti's Revenge is the highest budget porn film ever made, octupling the budget of the original Pirates. Pirates two will also be the last ever high budget narrative pornographic film in history. Samantha Lewis of Digital Playground acts oblivious to the storm that is sweeping the industry as DP promotes Pirates Too.

Speaker 15:I dealt with the Cleveland Boys, the Philadelphia Boys, the New York boys, and they eventually figured out that I talked business too. Samantha Lewis Digital Playground.

Speaker 9:Samantha Lewis becomes the talent point of contact and Shepherd's the careers of the final era of porn studio contract girls stars like Tigan Presley, Jesse Jane and Tara Patrick.

Speaker 15:I tell them that this is porn and that this is a family. But if they think they're gonna walk out of this job, the next Julian roberts that they're in the wrong place. I make sure to grill these girls before we offer a contract.

Speaker 16:Before you sign up porn contract, don't forget to trademark your own name. Don't make less money than your manager. Tara Patrick performer.

Speaker 9:According to Tara Patrick, Samantha Lewis was allegedly as financially exploitative of talent as any scumbag mail. I mean, she was previously a realtor.

Speaker 17:I've been criticized. Why I've been brutalized. Anybody who criticizes me, anybody who is just a jealous guy. Everybody who says, oh, Joe Francis is this, Look at the penis and tell me if it's small.

Speaker 7:Tell me.

Speaker 17:It's been widely reported that my penis is huge. But look, I have nothing to prove. Joe Francis producer.

Speaker 9:Joe Francis's Girls Gone Wild tapes have also moved from being sold on TV infomercials to being fully online. Joe Francis gets charged in court with sexual exploitation for failing to uphold two two five seven, the rule requiring documented proof of age verification for all adult content.

Speaker 18:I have private jets.

Speaker 17:I have a great life. I'm a good looking guy. I'm not conceited, but like I have girls around me all the time. Whatever I want. I make a lot of money. It's a great life. If I wasn't me, I'd fucking hate me.

Speaker 9:And while she has renounced porn, Jenna continues to plug her book and brand on her never ending press tour by doing esquires what I've learned column.

Speaker 8:I hate getting political and stuff, but when really right wing people get into office, they worry about things that should be the least of our worries. Whether or not I'm getting a doggy style from a black man should not be their concern.

Speaker 19:They should be.

Speaker 10:Worrying about healthcare, about our.

Speaker 8:Homeless, about the war, how about bringing the troops home?

Speaker 10:Homie crazy.

Speaker 9:After announcing her retirement, Janine Linda Moulder also returned to the porn industry and starred in Janine Loves Jenna. Janine is getting written up in the press, but not for her screenwork.

Speaker 17:You know this is my daughter.

Speaker 8:I'm the best mother I can be.

Speaker 20:Janine Linda Mulder.

Speaker 9:Performer Janine is tried in federal court for tax evasion. She owes the Internal Revenue Service two hundred thousand dollars and admits that she knew this when she bought a Jeep and a seven hundred thousand dollars house in Eugene, Oregon. Her ex husband, West Coast Choppers TV personality Jesse James is now married to mainstream movie star Sandra Bullock. When Jeanine is sentenced to jail for tax evasion, Jesse James and Sandra Bullock take full custody of Janine and Jesse's daughter, Sonny.

Speaker 9:When Jeanine is released after six months, she lobbies for more visitation rights to see her five year old child, which have been reduced to weekly daytime visits.

Speaker 16:I myself have stopped working like I used to in order to be here with Jesse and the kids, because we are in constant high alert, never really knowing what condition Janine will be in and even more concerning the condition Sonny will be in.

Speaker 13:Actress.

Speaker 9:In an Orange County family court, Janine requests overnight visits with her daughter and is denied. Sandra Bullock writes the court a letter saying Janine can't be trusted with the child because she uses drugs and passes out. Jesse James also claims the kid will be unsafe with Janine and her new husband, Jeremy Aikman, who's a convicted felon. Janine begs the court and Sandra Bullock to take some mercy on her.

Speaker 8:Sandy doesn't know what goes on in my house.

Speaker 10:I'd love for her too.

Speaker 2:Please come over, you know, I'll make dinner you know, let's sit down as two women.

Speaker 6:Good cause exists for the court to conduct a review to determine if Sonny will be safe with Janine. She should be restrained from allowing the child around pornographers, drug addicts, guns and firearms, felons, and other unsafe environments. Jesse James TV personality.

Speaker 9:Jeanine's husband, Jeremy Eikman, also writes a letter to the court saying that his wife is abusing vico in. She gets multiple scripts from quack doctors and buys pills off the street. He says she recently went away to a halfway house in Oregon, but when she came back, her drug abuse got even worse. He tells the judge his wife was recently so high on pills one night that she rammed her truck into a house and then rear ended a car. He says her drug use makes her moody and unstable, and he agrees with Jesse James that their house is not a safe environment for children. At the last minute, he rescinds this and writes a new letter in full support of Janine. Janine's request for expanded visitation is denied. She is allowed to continue seeing her daughter during supervised daytime hours. After passing a drug and alcohol test, the judge grants her one special dispensation to keep her daughter over on Christmas Eve two thousand and nine.

Speaker 9:The next year, Sandra Bullock and Jesse James's marriage ends when he's rumored to have cheated on her. The year after that, Jesse James's TV courier blows up when a picture of him wearing Nazi memorabilia and giving a seghile leaks online. James claims that the ss hat he was shown wearing was a gag gift from his Jewish godfather and that he's not really a neo Nazi. Friends defend him by saying Nazi imagery is part of biker culture and not related to its racist politics.

Speaker 8:Chris Angel came up and started hitting on me. He was like, hey, baby, want to go for a ride in my Lamborghini. I said I had my own Lamborghini and I walked away. Later that night, he found out that I was dating Tito and he came over to apologize. He was really groveling. He ended up calling Tito and leaving a message apologizing and asking for forgiveness. People are so intimated by Tito, and he's really good about keeping the wolves away from my door.

Speaker 9:Tito Ortiz puts out his own memoir called This Is Gonna Hurt and announce his plans to return to the UFC Octagon as a fighter after having strained his relationship with UFC allegedly under Jenna's influence. In two thousand and eight, Tito Ortiz appears on season seven of The Celebrity Apprentice, judged by Donald Trump. On The Celebrity Apprentice, Tito Artis lives in the Trump International Hotel and Tower alongside luminaries like Stephen Baldwin, Vincent, Big Pussy Pastore, Gene Simmons of Kiss, Trace, Ladies Love Country Boys, Adkins, and reality star Omrosa Newman.

Speaker 9:And then, after her miscarriage with Jay Gardina and he failed cycle of in Vitro, Jenna finally gets her deepest wish. At age thirty five, she is pregnant with twins. She and Tito are over the moon.

Speaker 8:I can't even express the extreme serenity that came over me once I saw my children inside me. It has been my dream to have children for an extremely long time, and I truly feel like finally the time is right and God has blessed me. I have never felt more like a woman or more alive.

Speaker 9:In two thousand and nine, the Follies burgire Showgirl review at the Tropicana, the one time crown jewel of the Vegas Strip, closes after fifty years of operation as its parent company enters bankruptcy. In two thousand and nine, the effects of internet piracy on the porn business are also becoming a parent A lot of the industry is still in deep denial about the effect that free streaming content is having on the existing content model. Streaming online content can easily be pirated, screen grabbed, and repoststead while the big studios keep trying to file copyright injunctions. There's simply too much piracy to prosecute. Just as audiences left theaters for video stores, they leave video stores for computers and phones.

Speaker 9:Some porn industry folks are convinced it's a temporary sales slum, blaming other factors like a purported lower quality of content from easier access to cameras and editing software than Ever, how can an industry making billions of dollars see its profits start to vanish overnight when it comes to porn. There's already a barrier of entry getting people to admit they're consuming it due to shame. Now that it can be seen for free, nobody wants to pay.

Speaker 6:The one thing you have to deal with is that free porn is here to stay. As far as the people putting it out, I have no respect for them at all. They're not doing this industry any good. And I just don't understand people are satisfied with free ten second clips. I mean, why short change yourself on jerking off by getting the cheapest, shortest clip For guys, It's worth it to treat yourself right when you.

Speaker 7:Do it good.

Speaker 6:Porn is a big ingredient in that Robbie d cinematographer.

Speaker 9:While some are still banking on new technologies like three D porn and high def cameras to save the day, the adult industry as they know it is already collapsing, whether anyone in porn wants to admit it or not. The only DVDs that are still really selling are parodies of popular movies and stuff like Who's Nail and Palin, which consumers are buying more as novelty gifts than to actually masturbate to digital playgrounds. June was wrong. It's not HD technology, big budget movie aesthetics, or even good storytelling.

Speaker 9:The consumer's crave. It's ease of access. But free porn doesn't even really come for free. It comes in exchange for your data, which is being scrape whenever you visit a tube site. In two thousand and nine, something called the Organized Fraud Task Force seizes six point four million from Mansef Brawser's parent company. They tell the FEDS they weren't aware of nine million dollars that had been wired from Israel into their Fidelity accounts. The Four Browsers bosses sell the company and use their tech skills to scrub their own Google results to obscure their connection to browsers and the pornographic film industry. Instead of browsers, search results for them now come up linking them to charitable donations.

Speaker 9:In two thousand and eight, a porn production house specializing in transgender female porn called Grooby Productions holds the first ever award show for transgender erotica. At first, the awards are called something I'm not going to say, the anti transler for transgender women that RuPaul still likes to say awards and fun. Fact, the California Transportation Foundation, a nonprofit associated with the californ Ffornia Department of Transportation, also called its twentieth annual Awards Ceremony to celebrate transportation achievement the exact same thing. I cannot believe that a California Bay Area nonprofit in two thousand and nine did not know that their award ceremony had the same name as an anti translur like they claimed in the Bay Area. The main Grooby website bills itself as the first transsexual pay site with original content. Transporn like gay mail porn and other porn not involving CIS, heterosexual men and women had long been relegated to a niche outside of mainstream porn.

Speaker 9:While the first event was online, the second annual Transgender Erotica Awards were held in North Hollywood. The event gained sponsors and added new categories each year, like Best FtM Performer, It gained traction and the awards show moved over the hill from North Hollywood to Regular Hollywood. There are arguments on both sides that trans representation in porn is positive, as well as the idea that porn just reinforces the fetishization and over sexualization of trans women. Like all porn, it really depends on who's making it, who's in it, and who's consuming it. On March sixteenth, two thousand and nine, Jenna gives birth to twins, Jesse Jamison and Journey jet Ortiz at a hospital in Newport Beach. She also launches a fragrance called Heartbreaker, top notes Raspberry and Rose, Tara Patrick and Evan Seinfeld divorce, and Tara Patrick releases a memoir called Sinner Takes All, a memoir of love and porn, and also the Joe Rogan Experience launches and airs its first episodes.

Speaker 1:For the past twenty six years, we have worked with the most beautiful and talented women in the adult business. We certainly will continue to do so. As always, when we find women who we feel are exceptional, we will not hesitate to work with them on an exclusive basis.

Speaker 9:In twenty ten, Vivid Entertainment Group releases nearly all the remaining Vivid girls from their contracts. Wicked Pictures also lets all of their contract girls go, except for two, Lupefuentas and Jessica Drake. In twenty twelve, a performer named Ali Hayes finishes out her Vivid contract and becomes the final Vivid girl in history. In an era where all kinds of work are changing from full time employment to independent contracting, contract girls are being phased out, none of Jenna's contract girls at Club Jenna surpassed or even reached Jenna's level of fame, and it seems increasingly clear that no porn star will ever be as famous and successful as Jenna was.

Speaker 9:It's not because they're not as talented or equally entrepreneurial. Jenna just happened to be born at the exact right moment to enter the industry at its absolute peak. Also in twenty ten, Instagram launches. The idea of the selfie has already become widespread. Documenting your life online has become second nature to kids who grew up at the computer age, and posting photos of yourself online has gone from totally taboo and allegedly dangerous to commonplace, semi mandatory. Wanting a little bit of attention from strangers is no longer seen as inherently shameful or vain. The wide availability of camera phones and new platforms to upload photos too, has made everyone a digital exhibitionist for a twenty tens aspiring adult performer.

Speaker 9:Signing with one of the big name brand studios like Digital Playground can still get your name a lot of exposure, but also gets you a smaller profit cut. With the Internet, performers can learn and operate a lot of the business side of the business themselves, like Danish firsted performers can now edit their own videos and learn the backside of the business like lighting and sound, to shoot all by themselves. Digital Playgrounds contract egirls like Stoya and Caden Cross say they're given full creative freedom to shoot their own content.

Speaker 9:Shooting one's own online content becomes another marker of authenticity as well as one that the performer can't be exploited if she's shooting her own stuff. The advantage of working with the studio is a guarantee of magazine coverage and stuff like sex toy licensing deals that will help build name recognition, But the market is shrinking with the advance of piracy and new sites like porn Hub. Sites like Instagram and other social media platforms also introduce a new category of fantasy women with public personas influencers. Influencers post fantasy content about idealized lives that the viewer follows parasocial.

Speaker 9:Sometimes the content is sexual, and sometimes it's cooking or going to the gym or something, but the idea is the same one put forth by Danny, Ash and Jenna follow along with a carefully curated version of My life Online.

Speaker 7:I was a geek.

Speaker 18:Fabian Tilbin businessman.

Speaker 9:Man when a Canadian multinational pornography conglomerate funded by Canadian private equity firm Ethical Capital Partners acquires Digital Playground, Digital Playground announces the company will continue to operate out of its Canoga Park studio. Manwen finances the Digital Playground acquisition with a nine figure loan from a fund on Wall Street.

Speaker 15:The Digital Playground vision of its contract stars will remain unaffected with man when only supporting them to reach beyond what they think is possible. They understand what makes these women you unique and plan to support them in their own endeavors while remaining digital plague and exclusive contract stores.

Speaker 9:Manwin is owned by a thirty year old computer programmer from Achen, Germany named Fabian Tillman. A Gemini. Tilman develops a thing called NATS next Generation Affiliate tracking software giving tube sites click based ad revenue. Their ad department is run by a banner ad network called Traffic Junkie. Adult sites mostly make money by forcing you to click through a bunch of ads, keeping you on the site longer. The overly crowded and chaotically horny vibe of bootleg tube sites recalls the neon casino signs of Las Vegas. Come on in, have some fun. Whatever you want, We've got it.

Speaker 1:There's no question those man. When guys are smart and they know what they're doing.

Speaker 9:At first, the tube sites run almost entirely unpirated content, as well as allowing for amateurs to upload their own content for free. The sites are flooded with illegally uploaded videos faster than porn studios and their anti piracy IT experts can flag them down. The tubes are likened to vampires, sucking up all existing porn content like a big tube worm, and in the process destroying the financial model of the studios.

Speaker 18:That's basically that I figured out. It seems to be an awfully good THNK to via a loot websites in their current climate, because you can get sync, fatique and the obvious ways to improve what they're doing.

Speaker 9:The combined traffic of the Manwin portfolio of adult film aggregator tube sites is doing almost as much traffic as Google or Amazon. The Manwin portfolio expands to include almost every major porn website, gay and straight. The moment that consumers can see porn online without having to purchase physical media, all but the oldest consumers immediately stopped doing so. Forever with pornography, a lot of customers were always reluctant to have their name or credit card directly attached to the purchase.

Speaker 9:This is where I tell you that even though you didn't type your name or credit card number into a porn tube site, all that data exists somewhere up in the cloud. They know what you jerk off to.

Speaker 21:To me, this deal is no different than the acquisition of pigs Are by Disney. The consumer is going to see more blockbusters, big budget productions, and it's our goal to create the next genre of adult entertainment. This acquisition is a marriage between two industry leaders. Adult entertainment is changing, and Manvein has a lead on technology.

Speaker 14:June direct there.

Speaker 9:The emergence of mega companies like Manwin is part of a growing trend in all media industries monopolization. The two thousands porn studios are struggling to stay afloat financially with the advent of tube sites and can't afford not to take the buyouts. Small independent porn studios are getting crushed under the financial weight of the new tube site conglomerates. The remaining indie porn studios, like San Francisco's kink dot Com, focus on specific content niches. By the twenty tens, there's a new big three in porn Manwin which rebrands itself as mind Geek Hustler, which takes its brand name recognition online and is willing to host the hardcore porn which hire end brand Playboy still won't touch, and Vivid Entertainment Group Vivid Steve Hirsch, who foresaw the title shift from film to video, sees the signs again and gets Vivid content online pronto, while the other established studios delay moving online.

Speaker 9:There is still a hope within the adult industry that Google will eliminate the big tube sites in their rampant content piracy by copyright striking them or ranking them down, but there is an unwillingness among mainstream tech companies to acknowledge the adult side of screen time. A company like Wicked Pictures asking for its pirated films to be struck for copyright infringement doesn't carry the same weight as a big studio like Sony Pictures, which in twenty fourteen experiences a major leak of its pirated tent pole films and embarrassing internal communications. The click based ad revenue system on tube sites doesn't trickle down to the performers or production side of the business, even when the content is properly licensed from porn studios rather than pirated. The rapid centralization of the porn industry makes it even harder for the people making the clips to profit off their own labor in an industry where production is also rapidly declining. And while the tube porn sites might appear to be free, as the old tech adage goes, that just means you, the viewer, are the product. Just like with Internet entertainment group,

Speaker 9:tube sites collect your personal data to sell it a profit while you watch. Quote freeborn.

Speaker 18:Online is the first thing we think about when we do production. We can also package it later on make a DVD or TV segment, but first and foremost echoes online, and that's what it needs to make money. Anything else that comes after that is an upside. We make more money and the lower production costs.

Speaker 9:When general world returns, big tech comes for the porn industry. Oh, welcome back to general world because it is it's so easy to see a sex movie now that the only barrier of entry is computer access. The new porn tech companies aren't even selling what the old porn studios did, which was covert access to seeing other people fucking on tape, but also art movies, the magical realm of fantasy. What the tech era porn companies are selling is the ultimate late capitalist commodity, constant novelty, a never ending promise of newness and total freedom from boredom, constant consumption with no consequences or limits, and as always, porn now just reflects society at large. Novelty is also what Amazon sells, It's what all tech companies sell and why it's Enron's all the way down. They are promising a bright, endless future built around new commodities that refresh themselves like a web page.

Speaker 9:There is talk of man Win going public, but in usters are still afraid of adult content. Fabian Tillman thinks porn will soon normalize into just another form of streaming content. The tip of the spear for Manwin is their ownership of Playboy Television. Playboy is an established brand with enough crossover appeal that mainstream brands are willing to touch it.

Speaker 18:With his Playboy TV, we also got the way to get in the door of Google, Samsung TV Group and Netflix with brass. When we will knock on the door, they tell us to leave because they're afraid of the content. They're not afraid of Playboy, though at least they can be convinced to talk to us about it later on, I can try to push some other content into the mix.

Speaker 9:Fabian Tillman believes piracy is inevitable and physical media is on its way out. He leaves it up to the studios to get more creative with their products if they still want to sell, and so get creative they do. Vivid releases an online sex tape with Farah Abraham, reality star of MTV's Teen Mom, on their website. After Paris and Kim Kay, the stars of celebrity sex tapes are getting less famous, their sex tapes are still treated as a novelty item, A customer will most likely only watch once.

Speaker 9:The one million dollar paycheck Farah Abraham receives for her Vivid tape will be the peak of her fame, not a bridge to more work.

Speaker 1:It has created such a phenomenon and it's so popular. We were caught off guard. We had ten million visits to the site in the first few days, more people trying to access the film in one week than we had in the first six months of Kim Kardashian's state With Raja.

Speaker 16:As a company owner, Steve Hirsch always has been and always will be a big power player in the industry. Even though Vivid has changed a lot over the years, it's still one of the strongest brands, and he has always been a very powerful person. People really do not realize how much hard work and time and energy goes into having a successful brand in the porn industry. Making a profit right now is tough. It is possible, but it's not easy. Joanna Angel, performer.

Speaker 1:The new law makes no sense, and it imposes a government licensing regime on making films that are protected by the Constitution. Measure B will have vast unintended consequences which may undermine industry efforts to protect the health of our actors and actresses.

Speaker 9:November twenty twelve, fifty six percent of LA County voters vote to pass Measure B, which will require porn actors to use condoms while filming sex scenes. It also forces porn producers to pay a permit feed to the county Department of Public Health for inspectors to check on who's following the new guidelines. A group of plaintiffs, including Stephen Hirsch, file a first Amendment suit over the condom laws. A judge rules that Measure B is not unconstitutional. Once Measure B passes, nobody has any idea how it's actually going to be enforced. Tom Myers, general counsel for AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the group that sponsored the new law, scoffs at the idea that forcing adult film actors to wear condoms is anything but a public health issue.

Speaker 17:Display what the adult industry's lawyers are claiming in this lawsuit, Measure B is not directed at speech, and as such, their first Amendment claims will likely ring holla with the court.

Speaker 5:Tom Myer's lawyer.

Speaker 7:They're telling the production house that in order to produce legally protected expression, you have to first get government approval, and you have to agree to shoot it in a particular way, namely with condoms. I can tell you they are leaving La County in droves. Paul Cambria, Attorney.

Speaker 9:In twenty twelve, an estimated ninety percent of porn is still being shot in the San Fernando Valley, but the whole industry is under attack on multiple fronts, and Measure B will strike a final blow. Porn industry folks see this as government interference, trying to destroy the industry at any cost.

Speaker 7:It's a multi billion dollar industry that employs thousands of people, and ever since this all started, they have been leaving and filming in places other than La County.

Speaker 9:The multi generational, one locational ecosystem of porn in the San Fernando Valley will start to die out. Porn has already been moving to states like Florida and Nevada where real estate is cheaper than California. With Measure B, the drain will continue between the tube sites and Measure B. There's no real reason left for porn to stay in the valley.

Speaker 5:The primary purpose here is it's a health and safety issue, and secondarily, we don't want them here. This is a family oriented community and we don't want them setting up their studios in Semi Valley. Mayor Bob Huber, Mayor of Semi Valley.

Speaker 9:Jenna walks away from the industry on top, and in her wake, everything has begun to crumble. There will be successful porn stars and the entire industry will transition to a new content model online, but the golden era of billion dollar profits and full length movies will come to an end. Jenna has tapped out to pursue her lifelong dream of motherhood. Will Jenna finally find the peace and mental quiet she's been searching for her whole life. Let's see a year after giving birth to their twins, Journey Jed and Jesse Jamison Ortiz, Jenna Jamison accuses Tito Ortiz of domestic violence.

Speaker 8:I am officially crushed. I have so much I could say, but I refuse to ruin Tito. I will never be the same. I lost the love of my life.

Speaker 9:Jenna's father, Larry miss Oli, calls the cops and the Fuzz arrive at the Huntington Beach house on Baruna Lane that Jenna and Tito share with their children. Jenna claims she pissed Tito off and he threw her in the bathtub, rupturing ligaments in her shoulder. She leaves the house in an armbrace. Tito says that Jenna is lying. He claims that he confronted Jenna about relapsing on OxyContin and she freaked out. Tito Ortiz is arrested and taken in by the Orange County Police.

Speaker 20:Jenna Jamison has been fighting an ugly battle with an addiction to OxyContin for well over a year, and this morning she had a relapse. We're here because Tito was trying to help her. Tito or Teaz never laid a hand on Jenna. Chip Matthews, lawyer for Tito or Tease.

Speaker 7:You can't hit your spouse, even if they are under the influence of anything. Ronald Richard's attorney.

Speaker 19:They have the cutest little kids, always perfectly dressed and smiling. I see them in strollers with the nanny several times a week, but they're never with Tito. They're rarely with Jenna either. Cindy Ross neighbor.

Speaker 8:Surprise, so many of you believe Tito's allegations. I'm going to focus on happiness. Goodbye xxx xx.

Speaker 9:Jenna passes a drug test for ten illicit substances, including oxycodone and cocaine, out a medical clinic in Las Vegas.

Speaker 8:I am definitely not addicted to OxyContin or any drug.

Speaker 7:The lab tests clearly exonerate Jenna Jamison of any hint, ioda, or suggestion that she ingested or was under the influence of any opiates or controlled substances.

Speaker 9:Jenna and Tito reconcile. She withdraws her domestic violence claim and he withdraws his drug claim. In June, they take a family vacation to the Bahamas while Jenna hosts a sponsored bikini contest at the Atlantis resort called Sun Fun and twenty one. But page six says there's trouble in paradise. Even though the pair are in couples therapy together.

Speaker 14:They weren't photographed together at the contest or at the club, and he was not at her table for dinner Saturday at Nobu. Anonymous witness page six.

Speaker 8:I remember finishing my book and thinking, Okay, now I'm going to settle down, have kids. I'm going to ride off quietly into the sunset.

Speaker 14:Now.

Speaker 8:Look, it seems like I will forever be that crazy girl who never rides off into the sunset. I'm always going to be the one riding the fucking bronco in Asles Chaps.
