Episode notes

On today’s cast we begin our coverage of the Luis Dante, the oldest and most storied of all the Space Marine Chapter Masters. We open obviously with his origins on Baal Secundus and his experiences in the trials of the Blood Angels. From there we follow his path from Neophyte to sergeant, to captain, and eventually to Chapter Master of the Blood Angels. But more importantly we focus on the many lessons he learns along the journey and how they shape him into the great leader he is today. [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the Forty K-Lorecast. [SPEAKER_01]: looking for a killer cast in me, John Barsaudi and Brad Chester. [SPEAKER_01]: This guy. [SPEAKER_01]: Today we'll be getting our coverage of the truly legendary Dante, not to be confused with the inferno guy that Brad was looking up the other day by accident when he tried to go up in the trunk. [SPEAKER_00]: Look, sometimes if you're tired and you're trying to do your research, you will not specify what you're trying to go with.

[SPEAKER_01]: But we're going to start off with very simple. [SPEAKER_01]: His origins is a simple boy on Balsakundas all the way to his experiences after the Neo fight, the blood angels and his rise to chapter master obviously in the blood angels. [SPEAKER_01]: For those who somehow don't know, the 40-kloricasts will be cliche on the lore of the Warhammer 40-K universe releasing every Monday at 7 p.m. Eastern. [SPEAKER_01]: Please follow and comment.

[SPEAKER_01]: They help the algorithm and gives me something to do. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, meeting comments. [SPEAKER_01]: We also have a bunch of links in the show note. [SPEAKER_01]: You can follow this stuff like our YouTube channel for a Q&A's, Brad's other YouTube channel where he does more competitive coverage, our other show, the history of 40K, and of course my other show retro recall focusing more on video games. [SPEAKER_00]: In addition, we have only on video games.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just video games, which is fun, over old video games. [SPEAKER_01]: It's the bad way of looking at it, which really, which the promise ends up being addictive, because we'll cover them, and then I'll just be like, well, I still want to play Metroid, and I'll just play Metroid for a weekend, who actually two weeks. [SPEAKER_00]: It's fun. [SPEAKER_01]: But if you do want to help us out, it's great way to help us out as you can either buy our merchandise, go to our website.

[SPEAKER_01]: There's links, there's stickers, stickers, sweatshirts, t-shirts, wine glasses, beer mugs, et cetera, or help us out with Patreon. [SPEAKER_01]: Patreon's a wonderful way to support really any artist that exists. [SPEAKER_01]: Massive, thank you to everyone who's already contributed. [SPEAKER_01]: It's been a great rest. [SPEAKER_00]: Artists now? [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, technically. [SPEAKER_01]: I've made it. [SPEAKER_01]: I never said we were good artists.

[SPEAKER_00]: I just say the rest of the day I'm calling myself the artist formerly known as Brad. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, catch you work, listen to the weirdest stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: I just, it just occurred to me you probably have seen Prince and Concert. [SPEAKER_00]: 100% multiple times. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, there it is. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure he is. [SPEAKER_01]: I just like, this is a lot of questions, but anyway, if you want to support us, it's more a matter of what were you wearing at the Prince's concert, because it depends on what year it was, and what you could have done.

[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't see Prince in 1990, and yeah, that's died more by point. [SPEAKER_01]: Awesome. [SPEAKER_01]: That's more what I was getting, is it occurred to me? [SPEAKER_01]: If you saw Prince in 2002, cool, you were probably dressed for 2002, which isn't that far off of 2026. [SPEAKER_01]: But there's a decent chance, yeah, 1990. [SPEAKER_01]: You would have seen Prince of the height of Prince. [SPEAKER_01]: Ooh, and you would have seen him in Ohio.

[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, there was a lot of outfit going on there. [SPEAKER_01]: You would have full head of hair, too. [SPEAKER_01]: Ooh. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm all out of the way. [SPEAKER_00]: Long, long hair. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's a lot of questions here. [SPEAKER_00]: Nice to meet you. [SPEAKER_00]: My hair was the middle of my back. [SPEAKER_00]: That's supposed to one centimeter for my skull. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: All right.

[SPEAKER_01]: Well, with that wonderful image for everybody, let's get on to the other part of a Patreon. [SPEAKER_01]: If you want to support us, $4.99, you get this show and history of 40K ad free, or 8.9 Caribbean Gilders, Gilders, because they were doing Kurosau, not just the weird blue liquor that I'm sure he gives Brad a headache. [SPEAKER_01]: Kurosau is located, if you guys don't know, it's a credible place to visit, because it's in the southern Caribbean.

[SPEAKER_01]: So it actually sits below [SPEAKER_01]: And because of that, the island almost never gets hit, which means it's fabled by the island been well-preserved, but also the nature around it's been really well-preserved. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's the reason you go to Kurosau. [SPEAKER_01]: Originally, Kurosau was, of course, a trading hub, which makes a ton of sense because of where it is. [SPEAKER_01]: And as a result, it's a cool blend of Portuguese, Dutch, English, and Spanish, which is created both a really fun local language, which sounds almost like [SPEAKER_01]: But a wild cuisine that's both delicious and vibrant, which side note that's actually kind of rare on islands.

[SPEAKER_01]: If you guys don't go to islands very much, one of the problems with islands is they're really beautiful, but the food tends to suck because they're very limited in what they're really what their cuisine can be. [SPEAKER_01]: Curacao's a unique one. [SPEAKER_01]: So, credit to them. [SPEAKER_01]: But the best reason to go to Kurosau is the nature. [SPEAKER_01]: On the land, you've got native flamingos. [SPEAKER_01]: You've also got a bunch of lizards, which are funny because the lizards will come up to you and beg you for food, which is, by the way, when a guan is do that, it's a bit rough, because they're not, you know, cute.

[SPEAKER_01]: But the funny part about that is, the locals also eat set a guana. [SPEAKER_01]: So when they do that, they gotta be a bit more picky. [SPEAKER_01]: They do call them, by the way, [SPEAKER_01]: That's the name for Guana, it is a penalty case I check in. [SPEAKER_01]: The row reason to go out there though, if you're someone like me is scuba diving. [SPEAKER_01]: It's surrounded by mushroom coral, mushroom hard coral, so figure out what that would look like.

[SPEAKER_01]: And as a result of that, you've got a lot of really brightly colored fish. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a Caribbean, so you get a lot of a smaller, but really brightly colored fish. [SPEAKER_01]: A lot of sea turtles, things like seven different species of sea turtle there. [SPEAKER_01]: And then that, of course, brings in sharks, rays of bunch of other stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: you know, to eat them. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's a really nice ecosystem and even more fun for whatever reason this island seemed to attract some of the world's worst boat builders because there's a bunch of wrecks all around the island, not far off the dock.

[SPEAKER_01]: So apparently for a period of time there, all of the people who couldn't make it as a boat builder elsewhere went to Curacao and people [SPEAKER_01]: But cool place to go. [SPEAKER_01]: Only caveat I will say is it is hard to get to. [SPEAKER_01]: You will looking at multiple connections getting out there. [SPEAKER_01]: So if you're going to go plan to go for a while because you're travel there and back is going to suck. [SPEAKER_01]: Now with that though, discord always fun place to interact with us or discord's large and discord is fun.

[SPEAKER_01]: It is a great place to kind of see. [SPEAKER_00]: Is it also free? [SPEAKER_01]: I was going to get there the next part of the most important part of any discord is that you don't charge for it because if discord's not charging me, why would I charge someone else? [SPEAKER_01]: It just feels weird. [SPEAKER_01]: It's the same reason I discovered people charged for their YouTube channels, which I'm going to get in trouble for another time.

[SPEAKER_01]: But we're not going to do that today. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a big fan of some of these things people do. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh hey, here's a free tool you can use. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to charge people to use it. [SPEAKER_01]: Jack, yes. [SPEAKER_01]: All right. [SPEAKER_01]: So with this, first time I start off with his Dante. [SPEAKER_01]: So the most important about Dante is Dante is old. [SPEAKER_01]: Not now again, in the lore he's old, I'm talking real world he is old.

[SPEAKER_01]: Dante is one of the oldest models in the game. [SPEAKER_01]: By the way, fun fact about this I was looking at this morning. [SPEAKER_01]: So Dante was in the first edition of the game, which is [SPEAKER_01]: Technically, the second edition is about how you want to look at it because you had road trader and then second edition, there was no first edition 40K, but I looked up the models available, Lehman Russ had a model, so did gas, and Marty is Calgar, but Marty is Calgar was sitting down with two attendants, it's a very cool model to look up.

[SPEAKER_01]: Then we get to second edition, which is again the real first edition, and there was Dante [SPEAKER_01]: Just like what I'm perspective, in ninth edition, the Ultramarines had eight. [SPEAKER_01]: There were 20 in the entirety of second edition, and I looked them up again. [SPEAKER_01]: I have Gaz, Ragnar, Yaric, Go Yaric, Tigerius, Calgar, Cassius, because again, we're going to still have a lot of Ultramarines. [SPEAKER_01]: Logan Grimnar, Carandris, RIP.

[SPEAKER_01]: Assarman, Fwagan, Malgan Raw, Jain Zarr, Bahar worth by all of them, but Jain Zarr didn't get a new model to hold, like last year. [SPEAKER_01]: Abadan, of course, Karn, Go Team, Fabius Bial, which is odd, because he kind of went away for a little bit. [SPEAKER_01]: As real, Ezekiel, Asmidi, because Dark Needles were really big of this period, Taiko, and then Dante. [SPEAKER_01]: Although I will point out, there were other named characters in the books, but you had to kid bash to make them.

[SPEAKER_01]: The ones I listed are one who had sculpts. [SPEAKER_01]: You could name someone else. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I say this is also back when special characters were allowed in most games. [SPEAKER_01]: So, because we're the rules that you don't believe. [SPEAKER_00]: What? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: You can hold a second or third edition code X. [SPEAKER_01]: You guys may not understand the rules all the way through, but it'd pull a second or third edition code X.

[SPEAKER_01]: And then look at the named character rules versus just right the other like Captain rules and go so dumb. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, good. [SPEAKER_00]: God. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the funny thing is his model is one of the oldest. [SPEAKER_00]: His model line is one of the oldest. [SPEAKER_00]: He also is been in the lore is one of the oldest, but he is currently in the setting. [SPEAKER_00]: the oldest living lobesides electron living when I say living I mean not in tomb that a dread not anything non dread not exactly is the oldest besides the the original sanguine or that's the only yeah the sanguine are tricky because the sanguine are isn't really yeah it's exactly they don't [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: So yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Dante is the older statesman of the Imperium. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And the cool thing about Dante is his lore is really robust because he has didn't notice in the second edition, the blood angels were the poster boys for the space marines. [SPEAKER_01]: It was in the first edition, it was the Imperial Fists. [SPEAKER_01]: Then it became the blood angels and didn't move to ultramarines until the third edition or so.

[SPEAKER_01]: And that's actually only because, can't really, there is your to paint. [SPEAKER_01]: It was originally, you know, imperial fists, but painting yellow is hard. [SPEAKER_01]: Then it became blood angels, but actually red is still a pretty hard color to paint. [SPEAKER_01]: You guys don't know that layering red with gold, red doesn't, you know, is this, but layering red. [SPEAKER_01]: It has to do with where you get your pigments from red pigments tend to be thicker, so they tend to, they don't layer as smoothly, blue pigments layer really well.

[SPEAKER_01]: So that's also why GW shifted everything over the ultramarines because you could pick up on a space marine box. [SPEAKER_01]: paint them in the ultramarine color. [SPEAKER_01]: It was one of the least the challenging must do up the gate, but at the same time, blues look beautiful when done well. [SPEAKER_01]: So ultramarines are one of the unique factions in that entry level player can paint up ultramarines to look tabletop standard and look good, but a golden demon level player can also paint ultramarines at a level that it will shine as well.

[SPEAKER_01]: So it has to wait blue paint works. [SPEAKER_00]: If you guys don't bring back giant banners, dammit, old school. [SPEAKER_01]: There's also, but as a result of this, the reason I give you a little history lesson there is because GW did a ton of a lower writing in the 90s. [SPEAKER_00]: Super specific, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and so the number one faction for space marines in the 90s were the blood angels. [SPEAKER_01]: The only two named characters they had were Taiko, who was kind of the present is how he would refer to himself in class and Dante, you know.

[SPEAKER_00]: Dante was the big one so we have a ton of information on Jacob did have two different profiles So he did but with that that no, let's let no one took no one took I mean also I'll be honest. [SPEAKER_01]: I forgot to go exist until I was doing the research for this cast [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm letting you know and let everybody know that there is negative chance that I'm going to be on first name basis with Dante for the rest of this class no matter what the notes say why this is because I'm not calling in my boy Lewis the rest of the way he's Dante here's a fun thing you can call him Lewis I'm going to call him Louis because that's how I pronounce that [SPEAKER_00]: Well, all right, neither, neither are happening.

[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, it's not the same or a man or Dante. [SPEAKER_00]: Louis might even be Dr. Dante if I want to put it on there. [SPEAKER_01]: It's Louis. [SPEAKER_01]: Louis, cool. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm about to piss off so many blind angels players and it's got to give me a lot of joy. [SPEAKER_01]: So let's start with the humble beginnings. [SPEAKER_01]: Dante was the original badass, but it's a different type of badass. [SPEAKER_01]: Titus, I don't really like as much as Dante because Titus is just a badass.

[SPEAKER_01]: He's always been a badass. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, he's been always being a badass. [SPEAKER_01]: He's whole thing is always your adversity, watch this, and he overcomes it. [SPEAKER_01]: The difference is with Dante, Dante's written to actually have emotions and goals. [SPEAKER_01]: He's not just like a John Wick, which is what kind of title this is meant to be. [SPEAKER_00]: Dante failed, I mean, Dante almost failed several times and had to be inspired to continue on and was led towards the path and told that if you persevere that you can go on, I mean, that's from the very beginning.

[SPEAKER_00]: because Dante is malnourished, messed up, or radiated because ball is a shithole. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: But the main thing about Dante, this is what makes people like him so much, is he has much more of a traditional fantasy hero background. [SPEAKER_01]: We had a full backstory where we actually understand his motivations, what has shaped him as a person, all of those things. [SPEAKER_01]: And that is stuff we don't get on some like a Titus.

[SPEAKER_01]: Titus is just like, hey, here's the child who was immune to fear. [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm not trying to knock Titus on the other way, but just don't taste. [SPEAKER_01]: There's just so much more backstory on Dante and it's so much more interesting to understand it. [SPEAKER_01]: So let's talk about it. [SPEAKER_01]: Or is he really known Louis? [SPEAKER_01]: So Louis was born in 442 of M40. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's how much detail we have by the way.

[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone else we talked about was born at some point four, four, two. [SPEAKER_00]: Because GW is stuck on the way that she's like, how bad that is though for everybody that doesn't know the exact imperial timeline. [SPEAKER_00]: He's over 1,500 years old right now in the current timeline. [SPEAKER_00]: I want to just stress how actual old. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, and how long he's been around. [SPEAKER_01]: In the game to be fair, this was also written when the timeline was 1,000 years earlier.

[SPEAKER_01]: So he's aged with the game. [SPEAKER_01]: That's what's so cool about this. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I mean, it's actually kind of the game made him all go like, oh yeah, Dante's still alive by the way. [SPEAKER_01]: Does he look 1,000 years older now? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, apparently the better part it will talk about this a bit screwed. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm skip it just a bit because one of my favorite things about Dante is and I would use this way more often than he does in the books of I've been ruling.

[SPEAKER_00]: I've been the chapter master of the blood angels longer than anyone you know. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no one has there's no one alive who remembers anyone being a charge of blood angels other than Dante. [SPEAKER_01]: So, Louie was born on Balls of Condis. [SPEAKER_01]: And for those who don't remember, Balls of Condis just got wrecked during age of strife. [SPEAKER_01]: Both Ball, Primus of Secundis were wonderful worlds. [SPEAKER_01]: And then the age of strife happened and they had nuclear war and they suck.

[SPEAKER_01]: They're giant, irradiated wastelands. [SPEAKER_01]: And unfortunately, when San Guini is met the emperor, he didn't ask the emperor to fix them. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, like, co-rex did. [SPEAKER_01]: and so it just because it just he didn't he thought that was rude apparently so they still really suck as opposed to again core access went hey uh i'm not going to join your leg unless you fix my plan in the upper one oh yeah we got a whole crew for that we'll be there on Tuesday don't worry about it [SPEAKER_01]: So Louis was born to a family of salt scavengers because apparently someone at GW had just watched Gandhi when they put them in this book came out and there a nomadic tribe on ball and they lived heavy air quotes there in the remains of the oceans there [SPEAKER_01]: Because again, GW likes to write things where all the oceans get evaporated from a planet and somehow the plant doesn't collapse on itself, not my circus, not my monkey, but just gonna go with doesn't make a lot of sense.

[SPEAKER_01]: Now, Louise family had for generations been harvesting the salts. [SPEAKER_01]: They go into the salt flats of where the ocean used to be, and they gather up the salt on a planet that has no water, apparently the salts, that's what people are want to pay for, like the inverse of water. [SPEAKER_00]: That's what it was, it's just the icey. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like the inverse of water world, although that movie was terrible. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, they would then travel between the few fixed settlements on Balsakundas and then they would sell the salt and so this life sucked.

[SPEAKER_01]: Life expectancy was around 40 years, little less than, and that's because you had all the wonderful things like radiation, starvation, scorpions, and raiders. [SPEAKER_01]: So, now this sucks, to make that even more fun, Louie's mom died when he was very young, getting still birthed to his brother because, again, sad back stories are critical to any hero novel that you're writing a true fantasy hero novel. [SPEAKER_01]: So, Louie there, all he has is his dead, [SPEAKER_01]: He keeps seeing suffering everywhere around here.

[SPEAKER_01]: He sees suffering and he hates it. [SPEAKER_01]: He really hates it. [SPEAKER_01]: He thinks the galaxy should be a better place. [SPEAKER_00]: But also, I love the fact that this about it from an early age, which is why he becomes a badass, because he doesn't just go, I want to get out of here. [SPEAKER_00]: He actually is first in his stories, are I want to make a difference for everybody else to make this suck less. [SPEAKER_00]: I do love that, and things are so much that he was like, I'm not going to make it perfect.

[SPEAKER_00]: I just want things to suck less. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I will call this out and sorry in advance, Blanjil fans, Dante kicks a ton of s. Dante's a great person, but he doesn't really improve the lives of any citizen that I'm aware of outside of not having them to prove so many, yes, I was just about to go there. [SPEAKER_00]: He stops so many citizens from getting ret. [SPEAKER_00]: when he gives the metro man, you're welcome. [SPEAKER_00]: I love you, random citizen.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's, that's all this is. [SPEAKER_01]: He's no John Cena is all I'm getting out here. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, like it's way, it's just getting, he's like wearing the bladers to habitat for humanity. [SPEAKER_01]: All right, it is a, I came here. [SPEAKER_01]: Fine, yeah, and also devastation of ball. [SPEAKER_01]: What didn't happen, the civilians doing great. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, then it's civilians, they, yeah, I mean, the one kind of he helps the civilians a bit.

[SPEAKER_01]: by showing you just he beats a shit out of some horse. [SPEAKER_01]: He does, but I'm just going then stay afterwards like hey guys, I see you're all living in these horrible hives. [SPEAKER_01]: Let me make your life better for you. [SPEAKER_01]: He's like piece out and then left. [SPEAKER_01]: Again, he's no John Cena. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, [SPEAKER_01]: Dane for Louis is that he is on Balsacundus, which means that if he wants to make a difference, he can take part in the Angel's Fall trials, and that allows you to become a space Marine.

[SPEAKER_00]: And well, that way, he comes. [SPEAKER_00]: He lets you become an aspirate. [SPEAKER_00]: It lets you be considered dubious. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a way to become. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'll just say it. [SPEAKER_00]: This is a bold thing when he's like, hey, [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to go through almost certain death to become eligible to have almost certain death as an aspirin. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Good luck. [SPEAKER_00]: Things aren't going great for you to go.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to try that. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going for the long walk here. [SPEAKER_01]: Now what I do like about this a lot is in this writing they actually then take this story of him wanting to become a blood angel and they added a bunch of personal strife to it which is cool because again so many of these stories are just like oh so and so was born on this planet and then became a space marine he did really well in the trials with Dante we go all the way back to even before the trials so he mentions this to his father hey I want to go be one of these [SPEAKER_01]: And Luis Dad says, no, like I don't want you doing that.

[SPEAKER_01]: But not, I mean, he forbids him, but not forbids him in a jazz process. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a, yeah, because he will, he knows that no matter what, either either my son dies in these terrible rituals, or he succeeds, and I still never see him ever again, because he gets taken in the instrument. [SPEAKER_00]: And if he becomes a Marine, he's not coming back. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which is sad. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean his dad's all alone. [SPEAKER_01]: He knows he will just die completely.

[SPEAKER_01]: Louis the last thing he has and it does suck and also is dad also is right. [SPEAKER_01]: Louis is not carol Lewis is a reference for your Brad this is I don't even think that's the old one. [SPEAKER_01]: Who I'm about to I'm about to long jump on here. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, to do with the calf lawn. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but yeah, he is a starved boy who is probably also irradiated and this is not, he's not built for this, but Louis had a mission and he was going for it.

[SPEAKER_01]: But real quick, before we touch this recruitment practice of blood age, it's been a while since we covered them, so we've understand it. [SPEAKER_01]: On either there's two difference. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's two planets. [SPEAKER_01]: Ball primus ritual combat. [SPEAKER_01]: That's the one where the main settlement is neat for them. [SPEAKER_01]: The ball secundus, which is where the most of the people live, you have to travel to the main spot, Angelfall.

[SPEAKER_00]: You had to go to a vision quest, baby. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, vision quest. [SPEAKER_01]: And some people are closer to this spot than others. [SPEAKER_01]: Louis was not close to it. [SPEAKER_01]: So you had to get to Jules' fall, which is where Sanguineus was found as a child, because this is the spot where the blind was built to the palace of challenge, where the aspirants and fight each other to whatever. [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, but there's a real line there.

[SPEAKER_01]: Big deal, because he's. [SPEAKER_00]: He has effectively, if you bring up the map, it just has a bunch of skulls and dragons over the salt waste. [SPEAKER_00]: Just basically don't go through here. [SPEAKER_00]: And he's Dante is going to just hoof it through the no man's land. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, no bench land of no water and angry rad scorpions. [SPEAKER_01]: Can't I will say I like this writing because one of the things I hate more than anything is the phrase You know, blah, blah is half mental.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's not it's 99% genetics and 1% drive Big broody movie broody. [SPEAKER_01]: It's cute. [SPEAKER_01]: He played three plays. [SPEAKER_01]: I kick off an incomplete pass and then they let him get a sack on the last play of a game that did not matter [SPEAKER_01]: No, actually it might be 95% you know Jx5% drive because hey Brad, do you mark this Russell how they work out for you guys I never want to talk to you ever again [SPEAKER_01]: So me ruin the one in her set metal.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he feels me dear. [SPEAKER_01]: That was amazing. [SPEAKER_01]: All right, but the point I'm trying to make here is that he malnourished child running through the desert went exactly the way you'd expect. [SPEAKER_01]: He got tired, then he got thirsty, and then he almost died. [SPEAKER_01]: Because he was no chance for who's going to make it. [SPEAKER_01]: But the cool thing about Dante is he was always chosen to be the leader of angels.

[SPEAKER_00]: 100% he's the chosen and he's chosen more by the spirit of sanguanias. [SPEAKER_00]: It would be the sanguinar and stuff. [SPEAKER_00]: He I love everything about this because every time he failed, [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Let me pull it back. [SPEAKER_00]: Every time he could have failed, it's not like they made it so he succeeded. [SPEAKER_00]: They gave him the ability to drive. [SPEAKER_00]: They gave him a little knowledge.

[SPEAKER_00]: They led him to somewhere that he could see. [SPEAKER_00]: They never basically picked him up. [SPEAKER_00]: They just went, if you if you picked, [SPEAKER_01]: If you make yourself up, well, we'll go through the examples. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, let's say, okay, fine, he's lying in all the deserts dying of thirst. [SPEAKER_01]: And well, it's written as the sanguine or appears. [SPEAKER_01]: And when I point out, this is a child on Balsakundas.

[SPEAKER_01]: There's no way he knows the sanguine or is. [SPEAKER_01]: What he sees is a giant cold angel. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and goes, [SPEAKER_01]: and beckoning to him and he goes, yeah, you might as well follow this. [SPEAKER_01]: It's definitely better than what I'm currently. [SPEAKER_00]: He was also the, again, he goes into the thing. [SPEAKER_00]: He was ready to give up, basically, and he sees the sangel, and it leads him on, and he finds water.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we find a corpse that was on the spot, that probably had been killed by a red scorpion, but they still had water, so he drinks the water and continues on his trip. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, again, but notice, he doesn't tell anyone about this gold and angel thing, like, because it's like, yeah, probably keep that one to myself. [SPEAKER_01]: He gets the trials and to be fair, he's pre-average at the trials. [SPEAKER_01]: They say he doesn't really stand out.

[SPEAKER_01]: He just survives basically, he's basically a happy medium. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, at the trials and important character, you guys want to read the book, the book is easy to look up. [SPEAKER_01]: It's called Dante. [SPEAKER_01]: There you go. [SPEAKER_01]: And the main chaplain looking over it is Malafel. [SPEAKER_01]: And the chaplains are there to test the resolve of the aspirants really to the highest degree. [SPEAKER_01]: They do things like a nine-day trek through the desert with no pause and no rest.

[SPEAKER_01]: Then they have to sit absolutely still for three days and meditate. [SPEAKER_01]: If you fall asleep. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, now I will say it's another one where to Brad's point the sanguine or appears is one because Dante or it's the Louis is sitting there He has to fall asleep and then sanguine or appears and jolt sim back a week, so he doesn't you know fall asleep So I don't know so much like giving him a choice as much as hey, we're gonna need you in like 300 years so don't fall asleep right now [SPEAKER_01]: Where Louie shines though is when they start breaking them up into squads and they do war games with these children.

[SPEAKER_01]: And they notice that Louie has a real knack for tactics and battle and also keeping his squad alive. [SPEAKER_01]: His squad is a very high survival rate. [SPEAKER_01]: He hasn't fight my brother together. [SPEAKER_01]: During these trials, though, he befriends another aspirant named Florian. [SPEAKER_01]: Florian actually comes from similar background, a horrible part of Balsicondus, but Florian is his goal is to become a spaceman, because Florian is dying.

[SPEAKER_01]: He is riddled with cancer, and the only way he will survive will be to get, you know, the genes he'd implantation, which would actually cure him by the way. [SPEAKER_01]: That's really important, because while they're going through all the tests, [SPEAKER_01]: Louis notices something and he just sees their children dying as part of these tests and he's like, why? [SPEAKER_01]: No, no one did anything wrong. [SPEAKER_01]: These are not evil people.

[SPEAKER_01]: We're just killing people for what? [SPEAKER_01]: You know, these are citizens of ball. [SPEAKER_01]: What's the goal here? [SPEAKER_01]: And he starts thing upset about it, watching it happen. [SPEAKER_01]: And eventually though, this becomes a really great scene. [SPEAKER_01]: because I love that I, you know what, this is one of the best scenes in the book. [SPEAKER_01]: This is one of the best scenes in the book. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I love how they're so sick.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because Dante gets into a fight with another aspirin named Florian. [SPEAKER_00]: And Florian is getting raffle stomped by Dante. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And basically, he just wrecks in, gets him on the floor and [SPEAKER_00]: effectively is like finished immortal combat style. [SPEAKER_01]: And Dante's like, no, wait, not basically that's literally what's written in the book. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that is what he's saying.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, yeah, it's true. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, let's finish him. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, he won't do it. [SPEAKER_00]: He won't let it go, too. [SPEAKER_00]: He's like, you have to finish him. [SPEAKER_00]: And he starts ranting about if you don't finish him, you're throwing away your basically your entire future. [SPEAKER_00]: You will not become a space marine, everything. [SPEAKER_00]: And Dante just steps back and tells him, no, man.

[SPEAKER_00]: He helped me as part of what we I'd done before, killing him as a betrayal of the trust of brother that we have together. [SPEAKER_00]: It's treachery and effectively starts dressing down. [SPEAKER_00]: The Catholic. [SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: They just tells him. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it just says, this is ridiculous. [SPEAKER_00]: No, I will not. [SPEAKER_00]: This is against what you've taught us through these trials in the first place.

[SPEAKER_00]: What it means to be [SPEAKER_00]: a bloodage of marine. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a culmination line in it. [SPEAKER_01]: Is Malafel turns to Lewis and says, you are giving up on all the glory and power by not following through with this. [SPEAKER_01]: And Louis turns back and says, I didn't come here for glory and power. [SPEAKER_01]: I came here to serve. [SPEAKER_01]: And how have no part in this evil? [SPEAKER_01]: At that point, Malafel stops yelling and stands up straight and says, congratulations, you've passed.

[SPEAKER_01]: And because this test was called the test of horse. [SPEAKER_01]: And the whole I trail. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, it's called the test of horse. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's because it's the right out of the trail. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And the whole idea here is that horse betrayed his brothers in a quest for glory and power. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's the most important thing for a space marine is that you need loyalty above all else.

[SPEAKER_01]: And so the idea was that this was a test. [SPEAKER_01]: just turn on anyone else just so he can become a spacemering. [SPEAKER_01]: It turns out he wouldn't bother read the book and what happens to Florian. [SPEAKER_01]: It's not ideal. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was just to say or don't because it's nothing good, but it's not. [SPEAKER_01]: It is some cool stuff in Florian though because he doesn't have some really cool words, not in a crappy way, he says it's really cool stuff to Louis at the time and it's interesting, but [SPEAKER_01]: From there, he's taken to the fortress monster, the blood angels, and begins the process of conversion the space marine, which could have gone better for him, plus side, the gene seeds take, and now he gets to be called Dante, so I'll stop calling him Louie for the rest of the cast, which I'm sure he'd drive by and say.

[SPEAKER_01]: The downside, oh, let me psych up for what I have to explain happens next to this part. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, he goes first off, they make the drink from the chalice, the blood chalice, on this. [SPEAKER_00]: And well, we have to take a year off. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, then we first mean to talk about this was written at a time. [SPEAKER_01]: So Twilight wasn't out yet. [SPEAKER_01]: So I guess vampires were all D&D and Bram Stroger. [SPEAKER_01]: So not Goth and Cool, like hanging out in the [SPEAKER_01]: But this is kind of an ruin to because of that.

[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, they have to drink the synthesized blood of sanguanius, which then kicks the jeans heat into high gear and gives them all blonde hair, which is weird. [SPEAKER_01]: And it puts them in a coma. [SPEAKER_01]: And so for this coma, what happens is you go in the coma and then seven dwarves that take care of you and watch over you into a handsome prince comes along kisses you and wakes you up. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry, it works. [SPEAKER_01]: right?

[SPEAKER_01]: Is that not the system? [SPEAKER_01]: That's not the one. [SPEAKER_01]: All right, fine. [SPEAKER_01]: It's actually done more than that. [SPEAKER_01]: They put you in a coffin. [SPEAKER_01]: The genuine inside of sarcophagus and his leave you in there for a year. [SPEAKER_00]: Because you know, night. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, but it will also he is was longer than others. [SPEAKER_00]: So, [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and the whole time he's in there, you grow larger, your hair changes color, the organs rearrange themselves to where they're supposed to be.

[SPEAKER_01]: Gens still makes no goddamn sense. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, you're in there, though, one of three things usually happens. [SPEAKER_01]: One, you sleep the whole time, then lingo style. [SPEAKER_01]: So that's cool. [SPEAKER_01]: Two, you go crazy and you die. [SPEAKER_01]: Or three, and no one else has done this, but the Dante on. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, which also is nice compared to a lot of them because usually you go through multiple surgical procedures.

[SPEAKER_00]: The blood aides will just slam it all together and go have some night night time as opposed to some torture time in which is what usually happens to you as a marine. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, don't spend a year inside of the sarcophagus screaming. [SPEAKER_01]: And he just he has a year-long night terror where he cleans up primark names, dark god names and the names of banish demons, bad about say, baddish demons that either they true did not snuff him during all of this.

[SPEAKER_01]: I cannot figure out, but they chose not to. [SPEAKER_01]: Basically, what's going on, the pre-supplies are placing bets on how many days post process before he goes black ridge. [SPEAKER_01]: There's like, you know, there's a full on the Super Bowl squares that that is basically what we're at, you know, but they're definitely playing corners on that. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: The best part about this is he does a year of this down to get to have the sarcophagus and he says, who's the other side of the point.

[SPEAKER_00]: So guys, [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: What did I miss? [SPEAKER_01]: And they're all just looking at him like this is nope. [SPEAKER_01]: No. [SPEAKER_01]: Who's the zero? [SPEAKER_01]: Get with the hero, baby. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's their list. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he was already for some vanilla ice. [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, but yeah, so he's going to be the chosen one, apparently. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, from there, Dante has survived the genius of implantation.

[SPEAKER_01]: He hasn't found the black rage, although he still thinks it's going here. [SPEAKER_00]: So this because it is, it doesn't give a little problem at first because there was two camps on this with everybody, especially the chaplain's one not. [SPEAKER_00]: which was, is this, the chosen of sanguinious or is he gonna fall terribly, and they were pretty split in the beginning. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, there was a lot of, but everybody's all teen daunting now.

[SPEAKER_00]: But when he first came out, it was pretty split in what was going to happen with him. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: And so they were kind of like, let's put in somewhere where we can keep an eye on him. [SPEAKER_01]: Basically, let's put in somewhere where there's a bolter behind him. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, you're at all times. [SPEAKER_00]: will be right back after a quick break. [SPEAKER_01]: Dante's first thing though is he's sent to go fight works because he's a scout obviously with the blood angels.

[SPEAKER_01]: Ed, if you're going to take blind angels, Neo fights or this is a good place to put him. [SPEAKER_01]: Combat good orcs like combat and if you black rage, it's orcs. [SPEAKER_01]: No blood, no foul. [SPEAKER_01]: So. [SPEAKER_01]: They're out there. [SPEAKER_01]: They're on the world of Rora, which is in the Union Morious System, and Dante realizes partway through that he's being tested by his sergeant, not in a bad way, but in the like, I think this kid's ready for promotion.

[SPEAKER_01]: So let's give him a chance. [SPEAKER_01]: In the sergeant, Galilian believes Dante is going to make a good officer one day, and he gives Dante an opportunity. [SPEAKER_01]: sort of. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I was saying, sort of kind of an opportunity. [SPEAKER_00]: It's an opportunity to not die. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, yes. [SPEAKER_01]: So Dante leading his squad of Neophytes had accidentally tipped off the Orcs as to where their base was, not the full base, but the smaller base was.

[SPEAKER_01]: And so the sergeant went to him, [SPEAKER_01]: Clean up. [SPEAKER_01]: What are we going to do? [SPEAKER_01]: And Dante, though, does. [SPEAKER_01]: He sits down. [SPEAKER_01]: He divides his basically a perfect tactical escape plan. [SPEAKER_01]: Let's then break the squad free of the work attack. [SPEAKER_01]: They take no casualties and they're able to rejoin the main base. [SPEAKER_01]: But what's important about this is Dante learns a really good lesson.

[SPEAKER_01]: What he learns is that he will make mistakes. [SPEAKER_01]: They show this really well in the thing in the in the books. [SPEAKER_00]: Because he talks through this, you know, he's going to make mistakes. [SPEAKER_00]: He's not perfect, but he should always strive to be perfect. [SPEAKER_00]: That's one of the key things that really think that they're own. [SPEAKER_00]: Because he always is going to need to fix it and fixing it. [SPEAKER_00]: He's figuring out how he can be better.

[SPEAKER_00]: and he's if he's always becoming better he can strive to be perfect and he's completely non-plus by the fact that he made some mistakes. [SPEAKER_01]: So the next version of Dante though we want to talk about is when it draws a lot of parallels to sing when it's a few hours of red and of death, especially when he's an end of death, there's a lot of compassion. [SPEAKER_01]: This is on the world of a Reyes 5. [SPEAKER_01]: It's the pacification of a Reyes 5.

[SPEAKER_01]: A Reyes 5 had a request for aid to the Imperium to deal with a Zeno threat. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, the request for aid is kind of funny, because the alien in question are the already, who are not a threat. [SPEAKER_01]: What had happened was super not a threat. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: The colony in question had been destroyed by civil war, chaos, no one knows, but people were all dead. [SPEAKER_01]: And the already are a peaceful Zeno species that had their barely armed and their barely armored.

[SPEAKER_01]: And they unfortunately had come upon the ruin colony and were just scavenging it. [SPEAKER_01]: The blood angels don't know that stages show up and they see Zeno and go. [SPEAKER_00]: And they are planting full of things. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: twizzle straws and it keeps like what the hell is happening? [SPEAKER_01]: They're not even shooting back and the blood angels are just going hand on them. [SPEAKER_01]: But in this story, Dante is introduced to two things.

[SPEAKER_01]: A that compassion has no place in the armies of the Imperium and to the Red Thirst. [SPEAKER_01]: So the first thing that occurs is during the pacification, Dante and his squad come upon [SPEAKER_01]: But there's literally just slaughtering these things. [SPEAKER_01]: His battle brother, Arvan, loses control of himself. [SPEAKER_01]: And he actually starts punching Dante at one point. [SPEAKER_01]: And because Dante tries to intervene, because Arvan just hacking away at a dead corpse.

[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what are you doing, man? [SPEAKER_01]: And this is, at first, something is the black rage, but it's not. [SPEAKER_01]: It's the red thirst. [SPEAKER_01]: And all this slaughter, because there wasn't really a fight. [SPEAKER_01]: It was just a slaughter. [SPEAKER_01]: Had triggered something animalistic in Arvan. [SPEAKER_01]: And I really do hate by the way the red thirst just for the record guys. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry gw it's because it now we're getting this weird where we'll vampire thing All right, so No, guys, so it does it hurts me to talk about this [SPEAKER_01]: in order to pacify the red first, you have to drink blood.

[SPEAKER_01]: That sounds stupid. [SPEAKER_01]: Don't worry, it's going to get dumber because all of the blood angels apparently have retractable fangs. [SPEAKER_01]: So in order to stop the Red Thurs from the only successor chapters nowadays, it's not all of them. [SPEAKER_01]: No, this is canon. [SPEAKER_00]: This is in the book, I know it's back then, but yes, I'm talking back then the post came out like 16. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's back then.

[SPEAKER_01]: Back in the day, this is recent. [SPEAKER_01]: I hate this so much, but okay. [SPEAKER_01]: So the Red Thurps is overtaking Arvin, and the only way to stop it is they actually take his helmet off, and then they grab some of the blood from the dead already and just start force feeding it to Arvin, which then he drinks through his fangs. [SPEAKER_00]: Burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr [SPEAKER_01]: Quick note about the red thirst.

[SPEAKER_01]: The red thirst is supposed to hold the black range at bay. [SPEAKER_01]: So the idea is that if you routinely drink blood, you will then keep the black range from taking over. [SPEAKER_01]: So in order to do this, the blood angels have searched. [SPEAKER_01]: who then don't eat blood that they mix with wine. [SPEAKER_01]: This story is so bad that they call carash and they carry it around with them and they just randomly take swigs of blood wine.

[SPEAKER_00]: look they have their thralls just like any good vampire has yeah i hate this writing i will point out the flesh terrors or a successor chapter they have a different method yes they did so so so do the blooded drinkers successor chapter [SPEAKER_01]: not long after this though Dante then gets to learn all about the black rage. [SPEAKER_01]: So we've learned about the red thirst, that thing kind of sucks, now we're going to go black rage.

[SPEAKER_01]: This is on the world of Tobias Holt. [SPEAKER_00]: This story is so down. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a super cool thing. [SPEAKER_00]: You get mad about some names that think they're lame. [SPEAKER_00]: This is just a guy. [SPEAKER_00]: This might as well be the world of Tim Smith. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why this bother me so much, but I like other bias Hall, Esquire. [SPEAKER_00]: He's just an accountant. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're right.

[SPEAKER_01]: It is kind of a weird name before it plant. [SPEAKER_00]: Like, oh, yeah, this is the world of Tobias Hall. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, the world of Tobias Halt is a high world. [SPEAKER_01]: It comes under a salt by KS Warband called the Purge, which are hardcore miracle by the way. [SPEAKER_01]: I love them because their battle cry is all life is worthless. [SPEAKER_01]: And if you want to paint deathguard, you don't want to do a traditional deathguard paint scheme.

[SPEAKER_01]: Look at these guys, it's still green, but it's green and black. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't look really cool. [SPEAKER_01]: Center for different day. [SPEAKER_01]: What matters though is the purge fight dirty. [SPEAKER_01]: They use biologic and chemical warfare primarily because it's, it's knurgle. [SPEAKER_00]: They just try to spread the play. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: As much suffering as possible, because the more people suffer, the more likely they'll give themselves over to knurgle to not die.

[SPEAKER_00]: To be comforted by grandfathered knurgle, get it right. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: Now Dante here has these like back-to-back experiences. [SPEAKER_01]: First, he watches his brother, Laziel, fall the black rage, literally in front of them. [SPEAKER_01]: Dante just watching Laziel and Laziel, it's a really great scene of the book because as he's talking to Laziel, he can hear the black rage overcoming because what the black rage is is to remind people, the black rage is, it's came from the death of San Guinness.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the, a play, everybody has to 100% of the time, believe the last moments of saying, when he is, yeah, they channel the memories of saying, when he is into them. [SPEAKER_01]: So Lizael, all of a sudden, doesn't see himself on Tobias Holt, but on Tara, fighting Horace. [SPEAKER_01]: And unfortunately, he doesn't perceive one of the members of the purge as Horace, but actually one of his battle brothers as Horace. [SPEAKER_01]: This is back when on the tabletop if you ran death company, they could actually attack allies that that rule should come back, by the way, the death company are kind of obese sometimes.

[SPEAKER_01]: So they have to put laws I held down before he slaughteres the rest of blood angels. [SPEAKER_01]: But this is just part one of the problems for Dante on this world, because later on, we're trying to get the purge off the planet, and that purge used a lot of sub-derfuge to take out this one factory called an Honeywell-Hive. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was going to say, Honeywell knows how he will hive. [SPEAKER_01]: And Dante was protecting this with his squad, and he fails.

[SPEAKER_01]: and this fury of him failing sets him off, and he goes into a massive sea of anger, and he does solo six chaos space burings. [SPEAKER_01]: Basically, it plays more. [SPEAKER_00]: Six playings. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, however, so he does not stop there because he gets pretty raged out and decides to keep on killing much to the sadness of the random workers of Hollywood. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he goes for those of us at the age to watch the movie tunes.

[SPEAKER_01]: He goes full blown Tasmanian devil. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's just ricocheting around this place, killing people, and then he starts eating them, because again, but so the red, because he's overtaking by the red thirst at this point. [SPEAKER_01]: And while he's doing this, sangono arpears again, and knocks him unconscious. [SPEAKER_01]: That's what sangono just drops him. [SPEAKER_00]: Wow, I love that they save one guy do they oh no no no no no no no I go first off He waits until there's only one guy left and that guy's like oh my god Everyone ever do this dead.

[SPEAKER_00]: I guess I'm the last person in this horrible [SPEAKER_00]: Oh no, it's a Stephen King book and it looks like we found the Soul Survivor and in, by the way, sorry, not Soul Survivor, Soul Survivor slash whittness, yeah, to what just happened. [SPEAKER_01]: Dante's squad comes wandering in, and Dante has killed all of the played marines. [SPEAKER_01]: He's also killed and eaten a bunch of the civilians and there's one do all of the civilians and apparently by the way, the year 40,000, no CCTV, no flock comes.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's a good thing. [SPEAKER_01]: There's a good thing. [SPEAKER_01]: But they've looked around, look at the one dude and go, so no, we have to [SPEAKER_00]: there we go. [SPEAKER_01]: Dante though comes out of this and he's furious at himself obviously and so he decides to swear off drinking blood ever again. [SPEAKER_01]: He's never going to take part in the red thirst and that's as a key thing for him that's going to come up more in our next cast on him but no one else has really done this up until this point.

[SPEAKER_01]: So he just strip cold turkey goes, no I'm good, no more blood. [SPEAKER_00]: to do a lot of these type things, some premium that you can. [SPEAKER_01]: He leaves a charge, which is a lot of he's such a cool character because again, no one else, like the difference, when I talk about Dante and my like him so much is that they will do this for a lot of other characters in 40K, but with Dante, we get a back story on the Y. [SPEAKER_01]: Other people will just get the, oh, he doesn't take part in their intriguing of the bloodbread thirst.

[SPEAKER_01]: Why, oh, this one instant happened. [SPEAKER_01]: In the case of Dante, we get a lot of back story, [SPEAKER_01]: Eric, not long after this, Dante gets a promotion, and this time it's to captain of the fifth company of blood angels. [SPEAKER_01]: Although he gets it kind of the way that you'd expected to happen. [SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't the captain of the fifth company. [SPEAKER_01]: He was a sergeant within the fifth company, leading a squad they called squad Dante.

[SPEAKER_01]: They're sent on the pacification of Moss, which is a, it's a plan had found a piracy. [SPEAKER_01]: So Tortuga except Eldar Tortuga. [SPEAKER_01]: Because the Eldar, it was run by an Eldar Corsair named Helen Ayeth. [SPEAKER_01]: And he declared that this planet was free space. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, any pirate of any race were welcome there. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll be asking you read this book, you kind of are on the side of Hellenius, initially where you're like, so basically the Imperium just slaughtering anyone who's not human this area and this one dude's like, hey, if you've got a spaceship and you want to hang out here, I'm cool, you kind of on his side, but side note different day.

[SPEAKER_01]: Fifth company are sent there to go kill Hellenius and they go to the main city, which is the Adryus Freeport. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm fortunate for the blood angels, or fortunately, depending on how you want to view it, because this is how Dante becomes in the captain. [SPEAKER_00]: But, by the way, we'll be a recurring theme on every Dante advancement is. [SPEAKER_00]: How did you get your, your advancement? [SPEAKER_00]: Well, everyone's dead.

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I guess I'm the next in line. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: Congratulations, Europe. [SPEAKER_01]: Pirates Den's tended pretty well defended, like, pirate layers aren't really good. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, when he traps, yeah, they're now this haphazard thing of which is wanderin' there, so it didn't go great. [SPEAKER_01]: And in fact, Captain Avernus, who is the captain of the company, does. [SPEAKER_01]: And the siege, it goes actually pretty badly.

[SPEAKER_01]: But Dante is the last one standing. [SPEAKER_01]: And now he also, although, he also leaves the counter assault. [SPEAKER_01]: So the playing goes attack pretty well. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the captain is killed. [SPEAKER_01]: The bunch of Blancho's die. [SPEAKER_01]: And Dante just grabs whoever's around and goes, all right. [SPEAKER_01]: follow me and leads and they actually end up destroying the city basically. [SPEAKER_01]: Although Hellenia does escape, it's a whole city.

[SPEAKER_01]: Forget that. [SPEAKER_01]: He tried to lure him in. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, Hellenia did try to convert Dante to chaos. [SPEAKER_00]: And Dante went, yeah, good to hear your child. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm killing you for sure now. [SPEAKER_00]: I was going to anyways, but now I really am going to kill you. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but he does actually escape how I still escapes anyway. [SPEAKER_01]: It's one of his weird things were like, is he tempting in the chaos or is he just trying to escape?

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he does talk a bunch of shit in the way out. [SPEAKER_00]: I was going to say he does talk a wild amount of shit while we're doing this. [SPEAKER_01]: But at the end of this, though, Captain is dead. [SPEAKER_01]: Dante is, as a sergeant, he would be one of the sergeants, who is one of the next in line. [SPEAKER_01]: But he had in the battle really shown off the best. [SPEAKER_01]: Who's he the one who took the mantle of leadership and the battle succeeded because him.

[SPEAKER_01]: So it's pretty easy one of like, all right, you're in charge now. [SPEAKER_01]: And in the book, Dante, there's actually a cool scene of how this process goes of what it's like, the promotion ceremony to being a captain. [SPEAKER_01]: Read if you want. [SPEAKER_01]: But he becomes a captain and he's going to hold this title for about 150 years. [SPEAKER_01]: Actually, let's take a little moment here because the next bit we're going to get into is big.

[SPEAKER_01]: Just because Brad touches the beginning of the cast, I want to kind of, as we're getting into the end of the cast, talk about timeline here. [SPEAKER_01]: So Dante became a space marine for 67 of M40. [SPEAKER_01]: He became a captain in 753, so 300 years of service. [SPEAKER_01]: And the next thing we're going to talk about is in 900 of M40. [SPEAKER_01]: 999, 999, actually. [SPEAKER_01]: And I even share exactly what it is. [SPEAKER_01]: So if we go with the earliest, [SPEAKER_01]: five hundred years of service.

[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be working me talking out when we get to the next bit here. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's after he was born. [SPEAKER_01]: So he has been a space marine for a while, you know, just knowing that said several, several of the years, several of the years. [SPEAKER_01]: And as I said, he's not running the habitat for humanity at the blood angels. [SPEAKER_01]: He's actually full blown fighting through all of this. [SPEAKER_01]: So don't it?

[SPEAKER_01]: It's pretty badass. [SPEAKER_01]: But let's get to the Collaia sub-sector, which is our next and final stop journey today before we get to the end of the cast. [SPEAKER_01]: The Collaia sub-sector went full rebellion against the Imperian, and it was a heresy rebellion. [SPEAKER_01]: So, of course, call goes out, we need assistance, Ms. Basemrades. [SPEAKER_01]: And the first one to arrive are the Angel Numinos, and they are a blood-induced successor chapter, and [SPEAKER_01]: That actually a clinical story because they are a legitimate successor, but they were never a second founding.

[SPEAKER_01]: Because in fact, they were a function of there was a legitimate chapter called, with their bloody eagles, the bloody eagles, who then had a civil war inside of them. [SPEAKER_01]: Not a heresy of war, just their own little civil war. [SPEAKER_01]: And now you have the angels, new menos, and their red seroths. [SPEAKER_01]: But anyway, it's kind of a cool thing. [SPEAKER_01]: They're one of the successors there. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, the angels' luminos get there and they discover pretty quickly that the heresy is a lot worse than they thought, and they get routed out of it.

[SPEAKER_01]: So then they put up false, bad, bad, bad. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we need help. [SPEAKER_01]: So the blendals initially send three companies to the region and one of them obviously is Dante with the fifth company. [SPEAKER_01]: and it's around this time that the extent of the invasion becomes more apparent. [SPEAKER_01]: Because when we talk about chaos rebellions, more often than not, it's just chaos cultists. [SPEAKER_01]: There'll be a few like chaos space marines who appear here and there.

[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe small squads. [SPEAKER_00]: They're leading their rallying, whether they're directing shit. [SPEAKER_00]: This is not. [SPEAKER_00]: All kinds of power armors showing up. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so now we have to bring the warp. [SPEAKER_01]: So, as usual, the Boy Angels actually send the rest of the chapter now. [SPEAKER_01]: So, the Boy Angels show up in force here. [SPEAKER_01]: So, the three companies just weren't enough. [SPEAKER_01]: So, now you have a ton of Boy Angels there.

[SPEAKER_01]: And this is enough. [SPEAKER_01]: They also bring in numerous elements of Imperial Guard, Imperial Navy, and the conflict begins to kind of settle and start to turn to the side of the Imperian. [SPEAKER_01]: And we've mentioned before, space marines don't usually do protracted fights. [SPEAKER_01]: They come in, do a couple key bits of a conflict. [SPEAKER_01]: And they leave. [SPEAKER_01]: It's up to the imperial army and imperial navy, and I guess the sisters actually are being honest, to do the protracted campaigns.

[SPEAKER_01]: Like, all right, you guys are in your fight here for 500 years. [SPEAKER_01]: Cool. [SPEAKER_01]: We have a lot more of you. [SPEAKER_01]: Space marines. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Are a scalpel. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: I love everything that would happen here because this is awesome for Dante, but there's also shows kind of the Where chaos is for this because they get ready to leave and they're effectively limping away and the black legion translates in Effectively on top of that right on top right next to them and they go Not today, but also they see it opportunity.

[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, man. [SPEAKER_00]: This is [SPEAKER_00]: At the time, probably the most famous chapter, we're going to smoke showings. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the Black Legion saw an opportunity to destroy a first founding chapter and they took it. [SPEAKER_01]: Full blown. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, remember, the space marines are still their adept. [SPEAKER_01]: So when they are translating out, they're still ready for war, but you're not as ready as the Black Legion were coming in who were like, we're dropping on top of you.

[SPEAKER_01]: And this is a three-day battle of extreme close combat where we're talking, rating parties, everything. [SPEAKER_01]: And this battle is not about anything other than their survival of the blandness. [SPEAKER_00]: Dante! [SPEAKER_00]: Pumps his boots of mighty ass kicking to next level though, because him and his him and his specific group he was rolling with scottled multiple k-a ships drivers, which is just yeah, it's so badass. [SPEAKER_01]: This battle up until ball which will cover a time is one of the bigger battles because also remember those angels new menos I mentioned earlier.

[SPEAKER_01]: They had already left [SPEAKER_01]: And when they heard this, they turned around and came back and almost depleted themselves completely to try and save what was left of the blood angels. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: This title. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just good. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: He's like, hey, I'm here. [SPEAKER_00]: The kick ass and chew bubble gum. [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm all out of worry. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm out of the head.

[SPEAKER_01]: He is bouncing ship to ship all this stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: At the end of it, the blackening charmada is defeated. [SPEAKER_01]: But the problem is the blood vision armata came there on kind of a suicide mission. [SPEAKER_01]: They were like, we don't care if we died. [SPEAKER_01]: We're taking out a first founding chapter and they almost did because there's only 200 bullet angels remaining at this point. [SPEAKER_00]: And there is zero people in charge left to go.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, there's one, there is one, there is one, sand's Dante. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they went, hey, we've got to captain who's the next best guy, the cook. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and not under siege cook. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: She does. [SPEAKER_01]: By the way, he's a horrible human being. [SPEAKER_01]: Just absolutely horrible human being. [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to point out, I made the reference. [SPEAKER_01]: But I accept the effect of Steven Segal is one of the worst human beings in the planet.

[SPEAKER_01]: Just going to admit that right now. [SPEAKER_01]: But anyway. [SPEAKER_01]: they all end up back on ball in the segmentary priests and the chaplains just going to gather and they decide well this is obviously who our next chaplain master is going to be and it's Dante also but he had earned it yeah I was just about to say this yes there's nobody else around but also there's nobody else around [SPEAKER_00]: because the baddest dude in our chapter has been single handedly recklessly saying everything and directing perfect assaults all over the place.

[SPEAKER_00]: And also again, cool as a cucumber, just whatever man, hey, we're about to have imminent death. [SPEAKER_00]: You're like, good to hear. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll figure it out. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's go on. [SPEAKER_01]: But one of my favorite parts, though, is, and this is, again, why I like Dante, the chaplains and the priests are aware of some of the proclivities that Dante has, two things like, you know, compassion, which are not high on the list of chaplains.

[SPEAKER_01]: especially of any chapter. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he has been told multiple times. [SPEAKER_00]: It tell been told, but also in his contemplations when he sits in he doesn't meditations, that there is no place for mercy. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm actually just in the blood you're out. [SPEAKER_01]: Who is less will say a line with mercy, a [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, and he puts it in a chaplain, it's yes, he has a like, yeah, yeah, I encourage you talk about mercy.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I know you said you were against it, but you said the words out loud. [SPEAKER_00]: So just Jesus. [SPEAKER_01]: But anyway, he does get promoted. [SPEAKER_01]: And obviously, he's going to lead this for the next, you know, forever. [SPEAKER_01]: And we're going to pause there till next week, because next week, our coverage of Dante is going to take actually much more hilarious turn in that the legend of Dante is what we get to cover a lot more next week, because there's a combo here.

[SPEAKER_01]: There are things that we know Dante did are, again, for example. [SPEAKER_01]: And there's also things that were told Dante did, like carving [SPEAKER_00]: single-handedly having a chat with the silent king. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: That one actually, I think may have happened. [SPEAKER_00]: But this is what we did happen. [SPEAKER_01]: It seems like it's in one of the books. [SPEAKER_01]: It's this, but this is what makes the Dante stuff really great.

[SPEAKER_01]: People who don't understand, like, like, we wanted to do the way I wanted to write this out was the first cast was, all right, let's get it's factually up to chapter, Master Dante, because once you get the chapter, Master Dante, it gets wild. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know because I kind of feel like he's doing the William money thing where they go. [SPEAKER_00]: I thought you were doing this. [SPEAKER_00]: He's like, I remember it being five, even Prince is not full.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, that's a day. [SPEAKER_01]: It's well, Paul Bunyan for the Americans. [SPEAKER_01]: That's kind of what he's supposed to be. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know who the British equivalent is. [SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately, and I know G.O.B. [SPEAKER_01]: and we've been in British equivalent, but it's really great. [SPEAKER_01]: So next week we're going to spend a lot of this, like, here are the stories. [SPEAKER_01]: Are they true?

[SPEAKER_01]: Who knows? [SPEAKER_01]: Are they partially true? [SPEAKER_01]: But Dante turns into a bad ass. [SPEAKER_01]: And so we're doing a lot of that next week. [SPEAKER_01]: Till then, though, John Barsotti, Brad Jester, this guy. [SPEAKER_01]: See you guys then. [UNKNOWN]: Thank you.
