Speaker 1:Owing to the warm welcome they got here. Captain Cook referred to this country as the Friendly Islands. It is Tonga for us from the continent of Oceania, officially caused the Kingdom of Tonga, it is the only monarchy in this continent. The country is an archipelago that consists one hundred and sixty nine islands, of which only thirty six are inhabited. It lies in the southern Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by Fiji and Wallace in Fetuna towards the northwest, Samoa to the northeast, New Caledonia and Vanuatu to the west, Nui to the east, and New Zealand to the southwest.
Speaker 1:Its capital is Nukua Lofa. The official languages are English in Tongan, and the people living here are also known as Tongan's. Some amazing facts about this country are that it is the only Pacific country which was never colonized. The very first king of Tonga, called Tui Tonga, came to power around tenth century. Ever since the country has seen forty kings. The first Europeans to visit this country were Dutch explorers in the year sixteen sixteen. Having international dateline coming through it, it becomes one of the first countries, alongside Samoa and kiribas the first ones to celebrate the New year and have the first sunrise. The country also has a very new island called Hunga Tonga Hunga Hapai, which was created in twenty fourteen as a result of an underwater volcano eruption. This place has active volcanoes on four of its islands where the crater is filled with hot water. This place also has South Pacific's equivalent of Stonehenge.
Speaker 1:Some historians say that it was either built in the eleventh century by one of the monarchs and some say that it was built by Chinese explorers. Talking about the wildlife of this country, they have only one indigenous land mammal, which is the flying fox, and it actually is not a fox. It is a large fruit bat which has a wingspan of up to one meter and it's found only in this country. There's also one place here called Mapua Waya and it is a site of natural wonder. Here, some natural blow holes erupt as a result of waves crashing into reefs and they blow up to thirty meters in air. Now, let's look at the flag of Tonga.
Speaker 1:Tonga's flag has a red base with a white rectangle on the upper hoist side corner which has red Greek cross at the center. So that's the flag of Tonga for us.
