Speaker 1:In this episode of Little Explorers, let's talk about a country which has a huge rat species capable of opening coconuts with its teeth. Yes, it is Solomon Islands, named after King Solomon's minds believing that this place may have gold. A country consisting of six major islands and nine hundred smaller islands. Solomon Islands lies to the east of Papua New Guinea northwest of Vanuatu. Its capital is Horniara. Official languages English, and the people living there are called Solomon Islanders.
Speaker 1:There are some absolutely interesting things about this country, like there's an island called Kennedy Island, and the reason why it's called so is that one of the presidents of the United States, John F. Kennedy, swarmed to this place and took shelter when his boat was wrecked, and in his office he kept shell off a coconut in remembrance of the time when he survived the wreck. The very first settlers of this place were Papun speaking people from New Guinea. Then came Malinations and the Lapiter people appeared here around three thousand years ago. It was explored by the Spanish explorer Alvaro da Medana in fifteen sixty eight and around the Second World War, these islands were occupied by Japan. Owing to the Second World War, the islands have become really popular with scuba divers because they come in order to explore the aircraft wres shipwrecks and Second World War submarine wres which are found underneath the sea.
Speaker 1:Solomon Islands is one of the twenty two countries to not have an army of their own. Around the year two thousand and three, an Australian led peacekeeping force was deployed here, which stayed till twenty seventeen. A very interesting thing is that English is the official language of the sus country, but it's only around two percent of the population that speaks English. Other than that, there are one twenty languages which are indigenous to this place which are spoken here. It's surrounded by rainforests, thus giving it a rich biodiversity. There are more than one hundred and seventy bird species off which close to seventy are endemic to this island and not found anywhere else in the world.
Speaker 1:This country also boasts to have the largest raised coral atoll in the world, which is Renal Island. The eastern part of this coral island is the country's only UNESCO World Heritage Site. The country is also rich in plant species. It has more than four thousand, five hundred species of plants, off which more than two hundred varieties of orchids can be found here. Now, let's quickly take a look at the flag of Solomon Islands. The island's flag is divided in half diagonally by a yellow stripe from the lower hoist side corner to the upper flyside corner. The upper triangle with its base towards the hoist side, is blue in color, and the lower triangle is green with its base towards the fly side, and on the blue triangle are five white colored five pointed stars. So that's the flag of Solomon Islands for us. For other countries, they're flags and interesting things about them.
