Speaker 1:In this episode of Little Explorers, let's talk about a country which has just one city, and that's the capital city and a place where it is believed that the first coconut tree originated. It is Samoa for us, officially called the Independent State of Samoa, lying in the Pacific Ocean, its capital is Apia. Official languages are Samoan and English, and the people living there are also called Samoan's. It is located on the west of American Samoa, northeast of Tonga, northeast of Fiji, east of Vallis and Futuna, southeast of Tavalu, and south of Tokelu. It is believed that humans discovered this place and started settling there around three thousand, five hundred years ago, and these were the Lapida people who originated from the northern Philippine. Some very interesting things about this place is that Samoa lies right next to the International Dateline. Therefore, between American Samoa and Samoa, which is just half an hour away, you actually go back twenty four hours. This country, which has ten islands, initially used to be a part of New Zealand, and they celebrated their Independence Day to commemorate their independence from this country.
Speaker 1:One of the most exotic places that this country has is the Tosua Ocean Trench, which is considered to be one of the best swimming spots in the world. The country readers have an active volcano which last erupted in nineteen eleven and if you have read The Treasure Island, its writer Robert Louis Stevenson lived here. Some interesting facts about the culture of the countries that men like wearing skills in Samoa, which is a wraparound skirt. Other than that, people love getting themselves tattooed in this place. A very important symbol of some Wan culture are the mats which are woven by women and called atoga, which plays quite a significant role in cultural ceremonies in this country. Talking about a Samoan legend which says the origin of the first coconut tree happened here. It was about a girl, Sina and her pet Eel. When her pet Eel died, it had a dying wish. She requested Sina to bury her head in the sand. Sina did that. Soon after, a coconut tree grew in its place. So that's what someone consider as origin of the first coconut tree. Samoa's flag has a red and field. The top one fourth flag is occupied by blue colored rectangle towards the hoist side which has five white colored five pointed stars, four of one size and one of slightly a smaller size.
